Most of these guys are killin' it. I don't think I'll ever understand why's this Americana stuff so big in Asia and I'm not even sure if I truly ever was after that look, but I love to look at it. But it's really cool to see how people go for the stuff they like and perfect it. All the major instant fashion stores are nowadays selling exactly the stuff we wear here - check out Zara's 2020 Winter collection, Perfectos, jeans and truckers, not to mention that every girl on the street seems to be into 80's rock - on TFL but it's this kind of dedication that sets people apart.

Hi Monitor, I would recommend the book Ametora written by David Marx. Then you can see the history line of the development of Americana in Asia, centerred around Japan.

Honest question - Since IG began spamming me with countless denim accounts, I've noticed a curious pattern where you've got these same looking middle-aged guys with beards, dressed mostly in bland looking denim, striking a pose of touching their jeans cuffs while there's always a disgusting looking, colorful sock sticking out. Some even take pictures without shoes!

It's always the same thing, dude standing somewhere outside, lurched over, touching the cuff (they're not doing anything with it, I mean, what can you do with a jeans cuff!?), there's that horrid sock and some kinda uninspired lace up, which got me to wonder... Is that a fetish of some sort? Like the gay leather stuff? Or am I missing something?

Example of a cool account! Japanese know where it's at! Ogawa rocks! Fun, funny, entertaining and most importantly, badass style! And even more importantly, no sensible jean cuff touching. Ugh...

I just checked the IG accounts of rugged denim guys I'm following. I don't see anyone touching their cuffs. Got any examples? I'm curious now :)

Maybe IG is targeting you for some reason. The algorithm decided you like bearded guys touching their jean cuffs, showing you their socks :p

Lol, @MrProper posted a fantastic example but there are really many accounts like that.

Once you reach the end of the new stuff, IG kicks in with examples of what they think I might want to see and for some reason, it's mostly denim showing up on my feed even though I don't particularly care for that stuff (the jeans, I mean) as I only watch a few leather jackets accounts and some art. And it's mostly high fashion stuff I follow, not this look how rugged I am in my $3K getup! I don't understand why they think that photos of cuffs is what I need in my life right now.

I just tried to find a few but here, scroll thru this one and you'll see some prime examples of this phenomenon...
https://www.instagram.com/ruggedworkwear/

Usually it's just a few photos of this nonsense but today IG bombarded me with sensible cuff touching and bestowed upon me not just one but TWO accounts with dudes posing in just socks (the same happy ones, tho the rest of the ensemble was the same as always, jeans and trucker jacket).
If this isn't some fetish deal right there, I seriously cannot comprehend what other possible reason could exist behind this kind of content getting thousand of likes.

I mean...

Lol, don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on it but I don't get it!

I guess rugged guys don't have cufflinks to fiddle with, unlike the Rock.

The “cuff check” is a contrived way of getting the key elements into your ‘money shot’: selvedge ID, shirt, wrist jewelry, boots, fades, etc. Bonus for those who don’t like showing their face.

You see one of these accounts it’s like you’ve seen them all: red wing, selvedge, flannel shirts, beards... yawn. Wasn’t this style (urban lumberjack?) popular a decade or so ago?

Anyway, the cuff check might have been “cool” when the first guy did it, if the entire Instagram do it then well...

Cuff check!? That's a thing? What's there to check, anyway?

@Mich486 I honestly thought so too, that the lumberjack... Thing has died out and evolved into dunno, whatever, but I see IG is full of it and it's kind of more fake then ever.

BTW, since you guys are much more knowledgeable, what is it exactly with leaving cuffs on jeans like this in the first place? I looked up but couldn't find a clear answer.

Show off your selvedge?

Apart from that, I think it's just a matter of personal preference. I've been cuffing my jeans for years so I've simply gotten used to the look. Wearing my jeans uncuffed now looks to me like there's missing something.

As simple as that after all, thanks :)

The double roll just to show the selvedge has always intrigued me. I have always liked a 2” turn-up on my pants, but very seldom wear selvedge, so I’m not careful to get the second cuff right below the stitching. :p
I also think that many of these guys roll their skinny jeans too high and look silly. I’m trending more this direction...

I like to roll up the pant cuffs because it visually makes the legs a little shorter and interrupts the transition between pants and shoes. If the pants are a bit too long, then it also looks better rolled because the pants do not upend on the foot. But it always depends on the width of the pants and which shoes are combined.
