In the USA, as far as I know(it is around here), a wife beater is ribbed tank top undershirt which is what Widebrim was referring to. I assume you mean somethinhg different by wife beater?

Most of us can't even spell it, let along be willing to "find out what it means to me!"

We are, sadly, a culture that is looking for a way to smart off and have the zip-line comment, hence this whole conversation.

Whoever said it ... the comment aobut "nice hat" was on the right track.

When someone is just trying to find a way to say, where on earth do you get those hats? you have a conversation in the making

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

I'm sure most of us have gotten to enjoy nice conversations that begin something like.... My dad (or grand-dad) used to wear a hat just like that.

We should cherish those and not worry about the foolish comments

There are times, my wife is nice enough to remind me, when I deserve the comments.

I really have mowed the lawn wearing a Zulu-style pith helmet, just for the fun of it

At my age and build, I would love to have someone think I had the gall to "try" to adopt an Indy look .... more likely it would be Orson Welles

I found what I thought was a neat old wool Ascot cap recently and was wearing it around the house. My bride commented, cheerily, you look like Dom Deluise in that ... not realizing (I hope) the implications ... needless to say, I haven't worn it again.

What a dear!

Sorry for the thread necromancy - turned up this thread while searching for something else. Since I just saw the 4th Indy movie for the first time I figured I'd read it.

I've been wearing (admitedly, mostly cheap outdoorsy) fedoras for about 20 years and I've never once gotten an Indy comment. When wearing a trench coat (in the rain) at college I'd get gangster or even cowboy references - which amazed me by their absurdity more than anything else.

I recall this an posted because I just recently got an LL Bean signature safari hat and its my first adventure wearing a brimmed hat here in Hawaii. Been doing my best to fit in since I moved here 4 years ago and finally decided I fit in best as... myself, though I have picked hats, jackets and footwear that don't scream tourist. So I was out shopping today and ran into a buddy of mine in Waimea, which is a classic cowboy town here on the Big Island. There were cowboys here before there were cowboys in the Southwest US. Seriously.

So he greeted me "Hey there, cowboy!" in a very good natured way.

Cowboy?! Really?! Its a 2" down turned brim and I was wearing a safari jacket - my "sunscreen." And 3/4 length black cargo pants. [huh]

I think the comments are more a reflection of the person making the comment than of you and what you're wearing. In this case it was a friendly recognition of the new hat. In less well meant cases it's usually someone trying to get the upper hand by being clever. And its generally astonishing how un-clever they are. Doesn't bother me a bit.


It doesn't hurt that fedoras are somewhat popular these days. Even though I'm not wearing a trendy, thin brimmed thing... I've gotten a number of appreciative looks from the ladies since I started stepping out with my favorite style of hat. That doesn't bother me a bit either.

Edit: Oh, my brain just started working. I have waist length hair - doesn't generally match the Indy look. [huh]

Yeah, I've got the cowboy comments on occasion. I don't mind those very much though. You see, in my younger years up to the beginning of my teens, I constantly wore a cowboy hat, and dressed (somewhat at least) like a cowboy. I guess I'm still a bit of one at heart, not to mention I feel like I should get myself a new one, someday...

Anyway, since this thread was last active, I have received less Indiana Jones comments these days, and more safari-oriented ones in general. The latest example would be my siblings; they called my style safari as I happened to be wearing my dark brown Fed IV (admittedly with the brim turned down all the way around, it was constantly flopping in the wind too), khaki cargo shorts, a navy blue polo (huh?), and leather shoes with socks up to the length of my calves. I can't say I blame 'em, though.

As for the present, nominal popularity of the fedora and trilby hats, I agree that it doesn't hurt. I see it as a good thing. It makes them appear less obscure, and all of a sudden easier to wear in general. No one likes to be self-conscious, I'd imagine, and this situation is pretty much on our side.

I have to be cautious in this regard, since my MA is in Egyptology and I do own a brown fedora and a brown leather jacket. I'm very careful never to mix the two though!

All pretty funny to be perfectly honest. lol

I get quite a few "da, da da DA!" (you know, the Indy tune lol) sometimes. I find it amusing really. This is what they see and think Indy:



I also get similar comments when wearing a smaller, dark green fedora (a chopped down Akubra Squatter).

As I said, I find their ignorance amusing lol!

I have been lucky to only get nice comments on my fedora. These are generally from older people who either are wearing one (men) or say that it reminds them of the hats their father/grandfather/uncle etc. wore (women). Occasionally younger women comment also, but my trenchcoat gets more notice. Typically I get "Inspector Gadget" or "Secret Agent".

I guess I look like a crook...

I guess I look like a crook because so far I only get asked if I'm in the mafia. Then again, I AM in Chicago... so maybe it's natural?
