It's warm here right now ... like spring .... but on the Great Plains, that can change, literally, overnight, so it's best to be prepared.
I went into a local downtown thrift shop today and they had a Bee brand wide-wale corduroy flat cap ... sort of goldish-tan color. It's got quilted insulated lining and fold in ear flaps.
Perfect condition, clean... I don't think it had ever been worn.

I figured it was worth the 97 cents they charged, just in case it does get cold here again. If not, I can save it for next year.

My new Hat People full cut arrived today. This is their Heather Black, it's the heaviest wool they currently have according to Carol

That looks great! I think that will be my next cap. I'm starting to appreciate black as a headgear color more and more these days :).

For cold or wet weather it will certainly be better than my other caps. Although I think I can find some wool in the sewing room that will be heavier than this. I'll have to check. I also think I like the full cut better than the extra full cut which is what my other Hat People cap is....

Alrightey, now for my long overdue Hat Peoples Brown Herringbone cap in the extra full cut (I received it two weeks ago).

(Sorry for the crudded up mirror)

I'd have to say that it's just a touch browner in actual light, it's more like a dark gray/brown, and it hasn't got that yellowish tinge, that's from the light.
Fit's like a charm.

Extra full cut looks great. I went for the full cut, because I thought going the extra full cut was a bit risky not knowing how it would look on me, but that cap is working for you. I like how the bulkier caps give a little bit of protection to the top of your ears.

I think this is Camel Hair. Fits as a 7-1/4 despite the tag. Just over 12" diam. Perhaps someone can date the Union Tag.

Thanks, Lloyd, I am thinking of getting one in that shade or maybe the grey heather. I like the Cascade Blue colour they have, but am worried it may be a too feminine colour. I have a Full Cut in the brown, green and black herringbone. Considering that Kangol Spitfire costs about the same money, and sometimes more in retail shops, and is a mass produced woollen felt rather than a worsted yarn, the Hat People Caps are amazing value for a hand tailored item made in the US.

I have the brown green and black herringbone in an extra full cut. The black heather is probably twice as thick which was the determining factor for me.
I totally agree about the value of HP hats.

I am considering buying that black heather in a deep cut as a work hat for riding around on the ATV in winter, seeing it is such a reasonable price. I was going to buy a Wigens with earflaps, or a kangol bugatti, but both caps have polyester linings and aren't washable according to the tag. The HP newsboy doesn't have the earflaps, but at least it is washable, and that heather wool looks pretty durable.

Is that the material they have listed on their website as "Herring Bone green, brown, & black"? I've been considering that one for a while now but wasn't quite sure it's the right shade I'm looking for. If it is the same material, your photos have convinced me.

No, this is the one listed as the brown and black herringbone.

First, thank you for such a prompt reply to my question! Second, wow! It looks significantly darker in your photos than it does on the website. I know that's caused by the differences in lighting, but it's still quite a difference.

BTW, good choice! That hat looks great on you.

Hi all, the one Derek WC is wearing is called "black and brown herringbone. The one that is "black and green and brown" is much darker and the weave is really called "birdseye" not herringbone.

That is a woven wool, but that particular one is somewhat felted. It has a great weight for cold weather, and just enough drape to shape it, if you know what I mean.

Would it work in the extra full cut or be too heavy. It'd be interesting to see someone sporting that black watch plaid in a photo - haven't seen anyone with that one yet. I don't have any caps yet with blue in them - they're all grey and browns.
