Proper Barber Shop

There's a barber shop near my office that's straight out of the '40s. To my knowledge, most of the people working there are part of the same Italian family, and most are licensed barbers, though they use a shavette when giving a shave to a person 'off the street'. However, I can bring in my own shave-ready straight and the barber will be happy to use it on me. It takes a bit of preparation to do so, but it's completely worth it.

My barber does not do straight razors but the hot towels are hat lather are still head and shoulders above giving myself a shave at home lol

During my lunch hour today, I stumbled upon a fairly new barbershop, which is located in a rather hip, high-traffic part of town. On a whim, I walked inside for a cut. This joint is in-congruently modern but has traditional chairs and furnishings. The crowd and barbers are probably sub-50 years of age. There is a television, which everyone seems to pay moderate attention to; and helps entertain the shop. Today's feature was "The Departed."

I asked for a cut, beard trim and shave around the throat and neck areas. The barber was meticulous in everything he did. The shave part was all done with a straight razor, and was preceded with hot towels, etc. When I checked out, I was charged $35 CAD for a "cut and clean up."

With the addition of a $10 tip, I feel that I got great value for slightly more than one hour's worth of service. I would definitely look at doing this again, perhaps every quarter.

Awesome Adam! While that seems expensive to me I would do it maybe bi-monthly or something. I hope to make the new guy in town my every time barber but I know I won't be able to get the works every time...not on a teacher's salary! lol

Went to the local barber shop this morning. Got a cut, with the razor cleanup, trim the eyebrows and goatee, for $18, plus a $4 tip.

I was in an out in 30 minutes on a Saturday morning too! Of course, it's unusually cold and raining here today, so I'm sure it kept a lot of fellows away. And my shop is not fancy, in the least. They have a hat rack, about 10 waiting chairs, a couple copies of today's paper and a stack of magazines. Some of the fancier shops downtown will serve you whisky while you wait, have the game on a giant flat screen, or otherwise make you want to stay there instead of going home. But those places are $50-75 for a basic cut. I'm sure it's nice, but un-necessary for me. I will occasionally splurge for the straight razor shave...if you want to feel like a millionaire for under 20 bucks, that's the way to do it. But it's an indulgence, not a regular thing.

I pay $17 for a haircut, but a shave (with shavette) is an additional $23 -- way too rich for my blood.

It's funny - back in the old days, a shoeshine cost two bits; now, even here in NYC, they run just three bucks.

But a shave and a haircut, as cited in that old rhyme, used to cost the same two bits, but now costs $30 and up ($40 at the barber I go to).

A shop I used to get a cut at several years back when I worked in a different part of town was manned by 2 guys who'd stood side-by-side in that shop on that very spot and cut hair for...wait for it...fifty years.

When I was small, my dad took me to the barbershop in Carmichaels PA. When he was finished, he asked; " Ok kid, do you want any of that greasy kid stuff?" Well, being a kid I said yes. Thus began my love of Wildroot Cream Oil. I have to get it at Walgreens, but at least I can still get it. My love of barbershop shaves began when I was in the Marine Corps.
@historyteach.. where is this shop you speak of? If its in Huntington, I would like to visit it the next time I visit my sister in Salt Rock.

My barbershop is a bit different than the ones I grew up going to. It has a library from which you are free to choose a book while waiting. If you are a regular you can take the book home to finish if you are so inclined. Wingback chairs, a nice rug on the floor and soft jazz playing in the background. It's not only a barbershop, it's a sanity break. A haircut is $19.00, which includes a hot lather cleanup. A shave with a shavette is I believe 14.00 He trims my mustache and eyebrows as part of the haircut. When he is done, you get a shoulder massage with a giant electric massager. My son and I usually go together and I give him 45.00 for both of us. Not cheap, but worth it. It is one of the few luxuries I indulge in. The only problem is he is 76 years old. My 13 year old son is a bit worried about what we are going to do when Mr. Jerry can't cut our hair any more. So am I.

Question: How do all these new trendy "traditional" barber shops, such as Hawleywoods (Youtube it if you've never heard of them), get away with their "For Men Only" policy. I understand and even applaud their efforts, but in these days of political correctness and non-discrimination laws how do they get around them. If I hung a sign like that, it wouldn't go a week without some woman wanting the challenge it.

I like a medium fade which got quite expensive to maintain(hair grows fast) for a decent cut. I would have had to have my hair cut every three weeks at $25 + $5 tip for it to remain clean. A little over three years ago I bought an Oster 76 hair clipper and haven't been to a barber since. I miss the barber experience, but my hair is cleanly groomed always. The cuts are o.k. and nothing some hair wax or paste can't fix.

Seraph, you are lucky your Walgreens still carries it. The local Walgreens here has stopped carrying it. I go to a barber who is young but does the old school way of cutting and will use this product on me. It really does a trick on a sideparted contour and leaves a really nice shine that leaves me looking like I just stepped out of 1956. I never got asked as a kid, my barber would always always ask "Okay Dad comb it Wet or Dry"- my dad always replied "wet of course". My barber charges $25, that includes the hot towel and lather/straight razor around the ears and neck.

Doyle's Barbershop has been my go-to for many years.
Cut, hot lather straightrazor clean up and a beard and mustache trim costs me $12 plus tip.

I get all my haircuts at home , just as good as a Barbershop , havent been to a barber in over 8 years, saves a lot of time and money, plus I know how to cut hair from all the experience.
