I hear you. When I showed my review to my girlfriend, her comment was, "yup, pretty much agree, but will keep watching it a bit longer because I enjoy Michelle Dockery." And that's it in a nutshell - Dockery is the only reason to watch and, unless it gets better, even that won't be enough.

It's interesting that both Atwell and Dockery are playing American trainwrecks in these shows to counter their previous images as highly competent Brits. This is a good strategy on paper, but does anyone really want to see these classy ladies as losers trying to claw their way back though an endless sequence of poor decisions and self-destructive behavior? I know the viewing public loves a good redemption story (e.g., every formerly successful actor or musician who falls victim to drugs/alcohol/cults/etc. gets better and has a lifetime gig on talk shows), but I don't find it at all appealing.

Agree completely. I think the mistake Attwell, Dockery and others make is worrying too much about type casting and less about the quality of the material. Atwell was admirable in "Agent Carter," but the material - season two, really - was such a mess, she couldn't save it.

And while Dockery was fantastic as Mary, the material was equally outstanding - she didn't have to "save" "Downton." "Downton's" high quality allowed Dockery to shine.

Quality of writing is the first ingredient, without it, the project is doomed no matter how appealing the actor.

Indian Summers. Still enjoying it, and with one episode to go before the end of the series, I'm getting the feeling they knew they were getting canceled. It appears they're going to wind it up and not leave everything forever hanging. Just guessing here.

Good Behavior. Watching tonight. I don't have a lot of faith in TNT. The trailer didn't appeal to me. It's sad to watch actors from great roles in other countries try to claw their way into Hollywood. Are they too big for their britches? Desperate? Don't have access or opportunity to the best material like we would assume? If it doesn't work, they'll take the blame rather than the audience realizing how great the writing was in that star role. I could be completely wrong, but I think Dockery desperately wants to be a star in the USA. Unfortunately, quality and presence are far less important here than in the UK. There are an awful lot of stunningly beautiful people in Hollywood, and I suspect Dockery will have to get in line with them, finding herself in 2nd rate TV shows and movies.

Better Things. renewed for a 2nd season. Happy about that. Good season finale.

Westworld. I'm still having a difficult time connecting with this show. One of its weaknesses is too many characters and plot lines. I'm not sure it is beneficial to feel so weighted down. It got renewed, so maybe it is just me.

Divorce and Insecure. Two HBO series that I'm pleasantly enjoying. Thomas Haden Church is nailing it. I'm not sure Issa Rae has the acting chops to fully see her leading role. It might have been a smart decision to let a better actress work her words and ideas. Her acting feels a little clumsy, but I like the vibe of the show.

You're the Worst. This is an interesting season. The exploration of liberation from a parental death isn't something I remember seeing on TV.

That's the way I felt about the Showtime series Penny Dreadful. I watched all three seasons and kept hoping I'd like it, but ultimately found it more tedious than enjoyable because I felt they never quite managed to merge the various plot lines properly. Also, while Eva Green's performances were wonderful to watch, I found her character to be rather boring and couldn't understand why they spent so much time focused on her. Turns out the entire series was allegedly about her character, according to the producers; I never quite "got" that.

As for Westworld, I find it just intriguing enough to keep me watching. For now, anyway. And yes, they've approved a second season, but are saying it might not be until some time in 2018 before it airs. By then, I might lose interest; it's happened before.

Ha! Think that's about the time I quick Star Trek altogether. Didn't she fall for the hologram doctor, or something? That's what you get when you put Rodenberry's ideals aside, you get girls in skintight cat suits. Ugh. Though every time Uhura sat down her rear end was practically showing. :rolleyes: Yay! Women's rights! *shoves a weak arm in the air*

I like Marina Sirtis comment on her caricature Counselor Troi on the first episode of STNG. "We inherited my cosmic cheerleader outfit in the very first episode from the original show." A funny side note, showing the show was skewed towards teen boys, her caricature was suppose to have four breast, she wisely declined!

The Battle Of Los Angeles. A UFO show, about the February 1942 anti aircraft barrage. I didn't realize, the Japanese submarine shelled the California refinery just the day before, no wounder every one was jumpy! Every one makes a big deal of the hand full of eye witnesses that claim to have seen a saucer, they leave out the others that said they saw an airship, and even entire squadrons of aircraft. Of course, the vast majority of witnesses said they only saw search lights and anti aircraft shells exploding!

I always winced at that episode of the Original Series where Uhura has to fix something under her communications console and is crawling around with tools in her little cheerleader dress. Put on some damn overalls, sister.

That said, Captain Janeway was outstanding, she really could command a starship. And it's been awhile since I've seen it, but Seven of Nine, while gratuitously attired (although, she did have the body to pull it off), was a reasonably interesting character. At least, big picture, Star Trek moved the ball in the right direction.
