Those hats pictured (other than the Stetson Twenty) have some really nice thin dense felt. Well while it is easier with the older thin dense felt it CAN be done on the younger hats too. It is more crown height than anything. I do the same sort of thing with my Stetsonians, Premier Strats and other open crowns....they are more difficult with the thicker felt but it can be done. With the thicker felts with generous crowns I tend to do the "wiggly center dents" that scottyrocks talked about....otherwise I do a center dent that sort of rolls into deep long side pinches......both are more sustainable with that felt. This is true for even my vintage hats with a heavier Royal Deluxe or 3X felt or hats like the Stetson Twenty (which is why I put in really long deep pinches). I have pictures of some of them under the various threads for those hats and I think also under the hat creases thread.

Yes, IME, shorter crowned hats will not keep a deep, narrow center dent. Not enough material.

I have an old Dobbs with that kind of pliable felt that so many of us prize. It likes the deep, long side dents, and almost anything I put in the crown. For a while now it has had a crisp diamond in it.

When I first started wearing hats, I shunned the cattleman's crease in a cowboy hat because I thought it made me look like my dad. He wore nothing but cowboy hats with the cattleman crease.

At first, I favored the telescope, but if there isn't a generous amount of crown to start with, you eventually end up with that ridiculous dome sticking above the crown. The Akubra Snowy River is a classic example of this. The crown is relatively short compared to a lot of other hats with a similar crease, and I've seen more than a few photos of Snowy River hats with that silly dome peaking above the indented part of the telescope. To me nothing looks worse on a hat. I'm not saying that will eventually happen to any Snowy River hat. I'm sure there are a lot of variables, but the short crown of the hat makes me nervous. I've got an older Akubra slouch that has a very generous crown, and the dome of the telescope is well below the sides. I don't think that hat will ever suffer from "dome telescope."

Now I tend to favor the pinch front teardrop, or, if the crown is tall enough, a pinch front telescope. The pinch I've found tends to stop "dome telescope" or at least make it less likely.

a 2 3/8 brim and a 5 1/2 inch crown (which gave me more to play with as you see), I am unsure of the date....maybe early 60's? Both have wind cords, the button is tucked under the bow on the Stetson. Cannot say enough about the wonderful felt of those two......

Hey M Hatman, love all 3 creases but that Borsa, well it stands on it’s own! It kinda reminds me of a island rising up out of a volcanic crater lake. That’s just my Rorschach on it. Is it well behaved and stays when you wear it? Cool!!

That is quite the image..

and YES, the hat and its creases are quite well behaved. I did not use steam either. Though If I do get a very special crease I want to keep a while ....I WILL give it some steam to sort of lock it in.

So here is a thought/question....what does our choice of hat creases reveal about our personality? I tend to softer more curved lines and tend toward centre dents. Personality wise I tend to fall on the more agreeable end of the continuum. I notice Moon and others have a harder more angular aspect to their creases. Is it random or revealing?

I think you are looking far too deep into it

nothing more than a subjective aesthetic

I prefer a rumpled deep crease and the furthest thing from a factory blocked crease when it is on my head ... but I appreciate all of them if they were applied by ones own hands

I like a combination of sharp angles and soft curves. Not sure if that reveals anything about my personality though? I just like the way it looks! Interesting question though.

Here's one of my conversions. Resistol Stagecoach in Silverbelly. Tall straight crown creased in my preferred Teardrop. The tall crown allows for a nice deep crease.
