Just won this one on ebay from 40Cal. I can't believe no one else bid on it. One hundred dollars for a 40's Mallory? Geez. Give me ten of'em. I would've given him 100 just for havin a 40Cal bash on a hat. [emoji2]

Wow! My vote for deal of the year! I agree on the 40Cal crease too: none better.

I was willing to go to $50 if he would reblock it to 7 5/8. Sounded reasonable to me.

I was thinking stupidly. "A 5000 dollar hat for 2000". Dumb. I am not sure how much the diamonds and the gold are worth, but if my El Presidente is a guide, the felt isn't worth $250. Ignacio says the sweatband is showy because of the stamping, but the leather is very low quality as well.

Besides, if I wanted gold and diamonds, I would buy them separately.

calling it a “2X” made me appreciate some truth is advertising

"2X" ... of what for a straw hat?
Is it for straw content, weave-count, quality or price?
Any kind of "X" without stating what it describes is misleading marketing :)

P.S.
I'm just jealous, because I don't own any hats with an "X" :)

I bought this Bailey U-Rollit for three reasons:
1. It was a cheap 7 5/8 hat
2. I don’t have a “Formosan” straw and was curious (I’m expecting Shantung by a different name).
3. The honesty of calling it a “2X” made me appreciate some truth is advertising.

I have an unrolled Bailey U-Rollit. The Windriver, with a telescope crown at 3 3/4" and a 3 1/2" wired brim. It's a Small, my wife's size, and she wants it.
"But it's my stock, to sell. You don't even really like hats."
"I like that one."
It's still mine, as of this morning. Your hat seems to be an upgraded model over the Windriver, which has a fabric sweatband and no claims re the straw. I don't know my palm straws from one another, but it has the same weave pattern and frond size as your hat, but has small Xs that seem to be made by twisting the straw at regular intervals.
I hope to sell it unrolled, so regularly pull the wire and make the brim flat again, but each time it gets handled waves come back. You have to curl a wired brim I've decided. It wont let you keep it flat.

Formosan is from Formosa (Taiwan). It’s an artificial yarn rolled and coated with a plastic type covering. In the true sense, it’s not actually a type of straw or palm. I’m not a fan of wires in brims, but I understand what companies use them.

I try to get my wife to wear hats, but she’s not having any of it. I mean, she likes sun hats and big swooping feminine hats (she looks great in them), but she has zero interest in fur felt, any type of western, or Panama hats. I wouldn’t mind at all if my wife took an interest in my hats.

I must have created a false impression. She holds the entire idea of my hats, in the broad sense, in contempt. In particular, she does not like more and more of them arriving at our house. My thrift store hats sometimes take a nap in the shed before they join their brethren in what I see as my inventory. EBay? Unfortunately, she almost always beats me home. I suspect the packages bounce before they come to rest where I find them in the bedroom or shop.
I asked a neighbor to keep an eye on my front porch, but he hasn't

You just say that because she hasn't tried to get you to alter one of your hats for her, Brent. My daughter Alisa was pretty insistent. With my Knox 100, no less! [emoji33]

Not the 100!!
My daughter all have a mild interest and sometimes even argue about who gets what, but for them it’s all fashion and no substance.

I asked a neighbor to keep an eye on my front porch, but he hasn't intercepted once. Im sure I'll have to trade him.
She just occaisonally likes a particular hat. If I thought it would help in the least it would be a joy to make them hers. Instead, they seem to be one I had other plans for.
The hat I already made her was a nicer than average woman's wool felt in a caramel color that is rare to find in my thrift store mining. It was a Billy Jack open crown with two very shallow dents and a 3 1/2" brim, flat. There's a Stetson fedora I admire exclusive to Hats in the Belfry called the Playmont, a similar color, that I was really looking forward to trying to immitate to develop my skills. She wanted the hat, but as a Western hat. All there was for me to do was reshape the crown and give the brim a shape, but I got enthused and sewed it a powder blue satin liner and added a reeded, roan sweat. She picked this hatband I was about to throw away, a confused thing made up of various doodads, but with a tourquois feel. I went along, then to my horror saw it on $8 chinese hats on Wish.com!
Within a week she wanted me to sleep in the doghouse with my hats.

As far as the Formosan, I've read online about all of these things, looking at pictures, but until I learn it holding the straw in my hands, it just isnt going to stick.
