What can black or brown do for you?

I tend to the opinion that black is a bit of a 'blah' leather and rather limiting - brown and cordovan are much more flexible and tend to age more interestingly. I do like olive, but I would agree that an olive with more brown tones is a much more wearable colour.

Agreed. For footwear, Color 8 became my new black for all things shell cordovan.

I love leather colors outside the norm. Honestly at this point almost nothing excites me anymore. Has less to do with color and more with pattern. Nothing that exciting or new. I do still very much want that Herc d pocket should it ever materialize. Also, those electric leather co jackets. Those did light a spark for me.

I am sure that this has been asked, but why is black-dyed leather ubiquitous? Did it originally hide scars, or was it due to black dyes being easy to make? I have no idea.

Fashion / Hollywood. No more, no less. All colours of leather - greens,. blues, reds, creams.... - were widely available for car seats from the very early days of motoring; the only thing keepnig them from being more popular in jacket design is fashion.

My first leather Aero was my cordovan Bootlegger. I love it, goes well with both blacks and earthtones. I also love black leather, and brown. At one time I only wanted black, but I've mellowed a bit since then.... ;) Most of my favourites are still black, though. I am very keen on a midnight blue from Aero at some point. Next up when I get my waistline down a ittle more will be a black and a brown Shackleton, though I seriously fancy the idea of one of those in blue, with a red liner.... maybe after the 'staples'.

Black and brown jackets will probably never go out of style, but some of the manufacturers out there are going crazy with all sorts of colors. It’s hard to keep up. Red, russet, oxblood, cordavan, yellow, midnight blue, ... I recently seen a “olive” from Aero. I actually really dig the color! Not over the top & loud, well maybe for some but I think it’s cool! What are your guys thoughts about this? View attachment 200261
I personally believe that the muted color tone of this olive (really more a sage probably) is beautiful. I am a big fan and will consider this for a future buy. I really love it on the A-1 as well here. The muted color tones compliment each other nicely.

So this is an intersting topic for a thread. If this had been the year 1999 (or so) and it seemed that people still bought "leathers" via Wilson's in the mall, there was little or no love at all in those days for brown jackets. Wtih all the recent love being shown for everything vintage, the browns & cordovans have really come back into vogue.

That said, I have a navy blue PMR Highwayman here with me today, and I have to admit, I just plain love it. Not sure an olive leather will bve in the future for me, but I have to admit that I wear the basic black ones a lot less now with Cordovan & Navy as options.

l couldn’t agree more. I have a half dozen Aldens in color 8. It ages better than anything IMO. For reference, these are my oldest (7-8 years of wear).

When brand new, I put a nice shine on them. Hard to believe they are the same pair pictured above:

Funny how things happen. I've been looking for years for a black leather jacket that appealed to me, was my size, and was going for a decent price. Then in the last two weeks I've scored two: a Cockpit short peacoat and an Aero Connolly Steer 50's Halfbelt, both of which I'm in love with and yet are very different leathers and styles.

Not to hijack the thread and continue to direct it towards Color 8 Alden shoeland, but now it is time for a shoe buff workout.
A good weekend to all.
