The Philadelphia Story
Beowulf (had to throw something current in there)

I think there were a couple more that I can't remember at the moment.

An interesting double feature I watched last night: Tyrone Power in 'Nightmare Alley' (1947) and Dolly Parton/Burt Reynolds in a film about a lil' ole bitty pissant country place with a reputation of being the 'The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.' Burt actually sings in it! lol

"Pre" night on Turner

Thou Shalt Not: Sex & Sin in Pre-Code Hollywood (2008)
Pretty fair docu produced by TCM to promote a DVD set of five Pre's, three of which also ran last night.
Raised some interesting points but didn't go very far with them. One being that the Code cut back not only on loose morals, but modernity itself. No more of this nonsense about women lawyers or executives. No more Woman's Pictures with that edge that could appeal to men. No more outspoken social commentary.
You get the feeling that some of the film historians don't quite Get It - a little too camp conscious to pick up on the rhythm and snap of the era.

Night Nurse (1931)
Reviwed previously in this space. Saw it all the way thru this time. When you hear dance band music it means wickedness ahead. (Hmph.)

Three on a Match (1932)
Hadn't seen this one in 25 years. Story of 3 girlfriends from grade school thru 1932. Ann Dvorak's character is the center of it as a dumbbell who throws over her rich husband and gets in with creeps. Not very likable, but Ann is sexy as hell (and incredibly adult considering she was only 20). Bogart plays a supporting hoodlum and is not all that convincing at it - still had that Broadway second lead air about him. Bette Davis is in this too but leaves about zero impression.

Bound For Glory- I am not sure why I didn't enjoy this as it's about Woody Guthrie, The Dust Bowl and Unions. There was a very well done Dust Storm scene and of course the music was great.

Haven't seen this, but I imagine the subject matter might lead to a certain tendentiousness.

I think I watch too many films...

The last one I saw all the way through (I put a film on when I go to bed!) was Angel-A. French, amazing.

I fell asleep watching Ferris Buellers Day Off last night. I like trashy 80s movies lol

A rare evening out with Mrs. AlanC on Friday led to 'The Other Boleyn Girl' at the local theater: thumbs up from both of us

Last night on DVD, 'Silk' (with the ever enjoyable Keira Knightley): both Mrs. AlanC and I were so bored 30 mins into it we finally just turned it off -- not recommended, big thumbs down

I LOVE "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"!! It always make me laugh.

We have an "Alfresco Film Fest" in my town every summer.It is held down on the waterfront, with movies projected on to the wall of an old building.Everyone brings their own chair/blanket and enjoys a movie out of doors.Last year they did a showing of "Ferris Bueller" , I took my kids and it was so much fun.

They were showing a double feature that night, with the second show being"Jaws".It was starting at midnight, and my kids desperately wanted to stay.We left due to the lateness of the hour, but can you imagine watching "jaws" at midnight...on a pier...with the waves of the harbour lapping around you?

I actually think Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a very fine film, not in the least trashy. A classic American comedy.

I watched The Fountain yesterday--stunning, depressing, and beautiful film. Very well done, and covers the topic of death in a kind, generous fashion. I can't wait to watch it again!

Another odd combo I watched last night... 'Now, Voyager' (1942) with Bette Davis & a very-overlooked dark, hidden gem (with a sprinkling of comedy) 'The Frighteners' (1996) with Michael J. Fox. He's great as a psychic investigator in this horror tale. The special effects are incredible even by today's standards.
