Prom Suit?

Bally lucky it was 45 degrees. In that sort of weather, a top coat would have been perfect (which you could have then offered to your date). Wouldn't want to go walking around naked, would you

I've checked the weather for this Saturday (prom) - high 92, low 72. Oh well, at least its not out of doors :/

Well, it finally happened.

I personally don't have that many pictures (I own an SLR, so it's harder to tote around). My Aunt took this one, but it's very low res.

If any of my friends post theirs', I'll try and get them, as I know we took a lot of pictures with other people's cameras.

I was wearing an Imperial collar, and the tips had just started to "melt." However, A few minutes of sitting in the car with the AC allowed the starch to stiffen up again. The sleeves on my tailcoat were a bit long, too. I'll have to have them shortened.

Prom Tux

This is my son & his date about to depart for his Senior Prom last week. This is a rental tux but - at least to my eye - acceptably cut. It's from S&K Menswear & was one of their less expensive choices. He went with a vest vs. the cummerbund.
To my chagrin and after much practicing with my bow tie, he opted for the pre-tied so he'd have no worry on re-doing it if it were to "mess up" during the evening. At least I've managed to impress upon him a classic taste rather than something faddish.

I've carefully hidden away my gawd-awful prom pictures from 1979...

Good luck Mr. Turner I hope you have a grand time.

Looks grand. What are the lapels faced in?

I fear I must now purchase a black tie ensemble, as I see more use of that than white tie (sadly).

I wish I could find a vintage single breasted, peaked lapel dinner jacket in my size. I will, in the end, settle for modern, I suppose :\

Don't give up hope. I don't know what your size is, but vintage tuxedos are more plentiful (and thus cheaper) than other vintage suits.

I can tie a bow tie, but the last 25% is always a grunt. I know a chap who can tie them without a mirror and they look fine. I need a mirror to make a four in hand look decent and I have been wearing them for decades.

Btw, no one is going to notice your son's tie as long as he stays close to the young lady he is escorting.

I don't want to spend nearly as much on black tie, so all I'm going to buy is a dinner jacket (hopefully vintage!), set of black studs and cuff links, and a black bow tie. *edit* oh and also a black homburg.

I rather like the 30s look of a white marcella waistcoat with a dinner jacket, a good break from the norm.

I was amazed to find it. It was an antique shop pickup. I have a heck of a time finding vintage, as I'm 6'2", and even more so with suits in person, but I managed to find this one. It has a button fly that has been converted to a zipper at some point (talon). Very high waisted. Watch pocket. The lapels and the pants are trimmed in grosgrain. It's a custom tailored job from the Nebraska clothing company.

I was worried it would be too hot, but I was wearing a lightweight '50s orlon shirt under it, which kept me nice and cool. The shoes are pretty much my daily wear shoes, a pair of '50s or so captoes that I got at a thrift store. The suspenders came with the tux and have one of those backs where's there's a center piece attached by rings to allow for motion. The wool of the tux is a dark midnight blue in the light, not quite black, and it doesn't appear that that's due to fading.

I don't know whether to sneer at you prom goers or feel like a nerd for not going but I never saw the point myself. Sorry.. no prom pictures here

I envy your hair, Dinerman though, you folks with straight hair should be quite thankful, those of us with curly hair are cursed

true, absolutely! But i envy those who can wake up, and require very little effort to make their hair look neat and nice.

I completey understand what you're saying since my hair is very unruly. However, I discovered that a good stylist can do wonders. For me, it's worth the extra little bit of money I spend to feel good and look better than I used to.
