I don't know if you guys know about www.sewingpatterns.com, but it's a print at home site that offers big name patterns (Simplicity, Vouge, McCall and the like) the part that I found most exciting was this: http://www.sewingpatterns.com/index-vogue.html Vintage Vouge patterns, for cheaper that you can print at home and some of them are patterns they offered a few years ago that I haven't seen in print in a while. Thought I'd pass along the info to some like minded crafters.

Ha ha! Any doubt it's a 1940s pattern? Just look at the shoulders that go on for miles!

Aww, thanks ladies

I used a Sense & Sensibility pattern

I've got lots of vintage patterns that I've slowly collected from Ebay, but I'm so scared to use them cause they're quite brittle! This one was really easy to follow too - although, not very accurate. I think it's hand drawn, so I ended up with the front hem about 4 inches shorter than the back - took a bit of adjusting!

Swing Kitty that dress looks great on you! I love your addition of a bit of lacy slip under the bodice.

I am making that dress right now in a tiny floral rayon. Well, I made a muslin mock up of the bodice last night. Good thing too, it's been about 5 years since I've sewn, and even after having sewn since a teenager and teaching for a while, I was rusty and had to really be careful following the directions. I'll be cutting out the real fabric tonight and get a start on it.

Did you lengthen the sleeves and add shoulder pads? I got some mighty thick ones at a local fabric store that is a treasure of older goods. What kind of fabric did you use? I wanted some cute cherry print cottons but I was afraid that it wouldn't drape well and found the floral rayon on the sale bin (woohoo!).

I wanted some cute cherry print cottons but I was afraid that it wouldn't drape well and found the floral rayon on the sale bin (woohoo!).

I used a cotton fabric I found in the bargain bin too! You can't really see from the picture, but it has the cutest circus-themed print all over it. I didn't want to use anything expensive, in case I totally messed it up...but the cotton creases like you wouldn't believe. I wore it to work one day and looked like a total scruff by the end of the day!

I think the pattern had 3 different sleeve lengths? I went for the shorter ones. I didn't use shoulder pads, but due to the innacuracy of the pattern, the sleeves ended up being far larger than the holes to sew them into! So I put a gather in the top of each sleeve, which gave them a little puff sleeve which I thought looked quite cute.

I'd love to see pictures of how it comes out with the rayon - I think I might try to make it again with a more drapey fabric. Oh, and the slip was essential...not only did the fabric end up being rather see through, the top gaped rather a lot at the front. It says in the pattern to put a brooch in the middle, but I thought it looked a bit odd!

Swing Kitty, I'm surprised I didn't recognize it. I've made several of that pattern. If you can make that, you can probably make any of the vintage ones you have. The best thing to do with the brittle ones is to copy them onto some other medium, with paper, muslin, tracing medium, then put them away.

Thanks for the info, Swing Kitty.

The little puff on top of the sleeve looks great. I wonder if you cut out a sleeve size different from the body? I was afraid when I was tracing the paper pattern on to the tracing paper that I would do the same - and nearly did on the back piece. I went back and rechecked all my pieces.

Did you know she has instructions online too with clearer pictures here? Perhaps that will help, but now that you've made one, you're all set to make a few more. I'd like to make a skirt from it as well, it has a pretty shape to it.

Hemming it used to be difficult until I talked to a seamstress friend. She recommended that I use a rolled hem foot for doing it. It funnels the fabric in, folds it over, and stitches it all in one fell swoop. Fantastic stuff. It took a bit of getting used to, but really it's taken the frustration out of hemming for me. You might see about getting one of those feet for your machine. (I got mine at a local sewing shop.)
