I got a cute comment today from a little girl in a clothing store. She & her mom was standing right next to me, her mom bend down to her and the girl said 'Mom, is that Snow White?' pointing to me. .. I melted inside

The only comments I get from children are "Mommy, why does she have an umbrella?" (sunny day, parasol, you get the picture)

I always get the "you look like Lucille Ball" thing, being a redhead. It is a very nice compliment, because she was a neat lady! So, I have embraced my Inner Lucy. I am just waiting for the killer sense of humor to follow, any time. lol

I notice men (even young boys) are more polite to me when I dress vintage or vintage-y. I also get lots of sweet compliments, like "what a pretty girl!"
I suppose many girls dress in next-to-nothing fashion to attract men, so it always surprises me that men seem to prefer knee-lengh dresses with stockings and a nice pair of heels!

I once got 'Mummy, is that lady The Queen?' I suspect it was just because I was wearing a hat, not because I am an 80-something year old lady!!!!
I made a small effort to dress retro today for the first time in a while because I've been attracted to other historical periods. I'm attracted to many different periods but the golden and atomic age styles are easiest to encorporate into my daily wardrobe.
So while out walking I spotted my youngest son out walking with a few other kids from the kindergarten and an adult. My son repeatedly shouted: "There's my mom! there's my mom!". The woman with him answered: "No, that's a little old lady". In her defense; I was quite a distance from them.

I was at my in-laws' house for Thanksgiving a few years ago, and at one point I heard my MIL hiss to my FIL "Who does she think she is?" I always get comments when I dress in a vintage way, but always from old men who tell me

Older (mainly working class fellas) always go out of their way to make eye contact and say, "hiiiiiiiii there,' with a drunkin' smile on their face.
Im no where near super awesome hot, but Id at least expect a fella my age to maybe smile at me once and a while.

Could it be that younger men are a bit intimidated by a well dressed, well groomed woman? I was surprised once by a study that suggested that men much preferred women with their hair long and loose rather than styled up. They didn't like too much hairspray, either. What they wanted was something they felt they could touch. Perhaps when men see a woman very stylishly turned out they feel she's unnapproachable - that they can't talk to her, let alone touch her?
There might also be an element of "who does she think she is/she'd think she was too good for me" (or, in its more benign form, "oh, she's out of my reach!"). When I worked with my best friend in the same office, she was the most incredibly stylish woman around. Not vintage, but *always* in a beautiful suit with stockings, perfect makeup, high heels, and very sculptured hair. She was whip thin and had a very clever, alert expression. People who later fell under her spell when they actually spoke to her and found what out a lovely woman she was would sometimes confide to me how very much they were intimidated by her - my sister, who now regards her as our "other sister", admitted to me in the early days how much my friend/colleague had scared her.
