We saw "Safety Last" on a big screen with an talented organist who improvised to the film. It was great fun and the audience - of all ages - roared with laughter. My wife (who doesn't much like anything black and white let alone silent) thought it was great. Lloyd really knew how to make a film that stood the test of time.

I too remember seeing the show from the 70's with Harold Lloyd and I loved it! My mom would call out to me and my brother - kids! Harold Lloyd is on!

I would love to see his movies now.

For me Chaplin, Keaton and Harry Langdon, come first! :eusa_clap

But...Harold Lloyd is without any doubt among the list of best comedians of the silent screen.

Who can forget this still from "Safety Last"(1923), of Lloyd hanging from the hands of the clock, twelve stories above a busy street! That's a fun movie!!!

Oddly enough, Harry Langdon's son took up photography and became the go-to man for celebrity portraits and head shots in Hollywood.

Absolutely adore Harold. I'm a Chaplin girl first and foremost, with a warm and yummy second-spot for Keaton, but that doesn't mean that Lloyd does not absolutely put me in stitches.

I mean ... STITCHES! I too, like several of you here, think Girl Shy is his best film (I love how Mike Nichols TOTALLY ripped off the final chase scene when he made The Graduate) but The Freshman is the film that just slays me. I remember seeing a screening of The Freshman at the silent movie theatre out here in hollywood and the room was practically unhinged with laughter.

Gotta love the silent clowns, you know? I mean, really, do you think in 90 years people will be rolling in the aisles wirh the Judd Apatow and Tyler Perry movies? Somehow, I think not. And yet the silent clowns like Lloyd can still make you laugh from the gut--
and the heart.

When i was a child,BBC 2 use to show all the harold lloyd programmes the bbc had every summer during the holidays.Harold Lloyd and Laurel and Hardy were the only black and white silent era comedian i would stay in for to watch during the morning or afternoons.

When was this? My friends and I saw this in an old Schenectady in May of '08. The organist told great stories afterward, and a lovely time was had by all. Perhaps it was the same guy?

Man what a line up of films! Got to watch Speedy while on the treadmill at the gym, then came home & launched right into Welcome Danger. Movie Crazy is starting right now. What fun! Even our ten year old son got a kick out of these films. :eusa_clap :eusa_clap What can I say? The kid's got good taste.

Right - I don't find anything mention blindness or a sight impairment of any kind, but although he took strides to cover it up in filming, as well as publicity photos he was missing the right thumb and forefinger due to a prop accident.

It amazes me how wonderful and crisp the TCM prints of the early films like "The Freshman" were, especially when compared to the rather crummy print they have of 1947's "The Sin of Harold Diddlebock."

I looked at IMDb while watching "Welcome Danger" (1929) and discovered that Harold's co-star, Barbara Kent is still living at age 102.
