I like the idea and I have nothing against wool felt when done well. Not getting your hat soaked thru really isn't difficult. Contrary to popular opinion, I do have enough sense to come in out of the rain!
A front pocket wallet has become popular because people don't carry cash anymore, not much anyway. Maybe 5 cards are it. I'm an old guy and I always have enough cash to grab a good deal if given the opportunity, and membership cards, C.C.s, etc, skinny wallets don't work for me.
Yep, modern wool probably gets a bad rap, and there is wool, fur blends. I've seen some wool blends that you really can't tell what it is, nice hand, looks good but not fur felt. Stetson has started producing some hats that they don't say what they are. I e-mailed them and asked about that and...
Apparently, my hats have gotten some attention, if I don't wear a hat some people ask where my hat is and if I do, they want to inspect it and of course give their opinion. I've offered to take them to Levine hat to find them a hat. A few of them would like to do that when we get around to it.
I have maybe 3 wool felts out of 25 hats, but I do like those. One is a Stetson western that I am partial to, another is a red fedora that I purchased at Eddie Bauer, it's my Christmas hat and I have a crusher that my mother gave me as a present. As a rule, wool felt doesn't interest me but some...
Sometimes I need to remind myself that we are talking about used hats, it's not art and really not highly collectable other than to us eccentrics here, it's a used hat!!! Now that I've said that, if they were 7 1/4 I would be interested LOL.
It seems like vintage hats have really increased in value the last few years. Some of the prices I've seen on the bay are nuts, not unusual to see a hat priced at 500 or more. 200 is about my limit and that would be a very, very nice hat. At 500 we're starting to get in new custom hat territory.
You know, your kids do eventually go out into the world. Pick your favorite 7 so you have a different hat for everyday and sell the rest. Then you can start taking orders. LOL, I know that aint gonna happen! But I bet you would sell out in a week!
I recently acquired a Dobbs 5th Ave. Gordon. If anyone has any knowledge of this model and vintage, I'd appreciate the information. It's a pretty light felt with a nice hand, thanks
You can get leather strips from a leather supply store, there are a lot of different sizes so just get one about the width of the sweat band and put it behind the sweat band. That's the best solution I have found to downsize a hat. The leather will stay in place, easy peasy .
No one has commented on Nutria and how it compares . I'd be interested to know if clear beaver is actually much better than say a 6X beaver open road . Actually , what does clear beaver mean ?
A heavier/thicker fur felt, that is usually found on western hats, will deal with the weather better than a dress weight felt. Western hats are actually work hats although some are pretty damn fancy and expensive. Stetson has one that is 5 grand.
Kansas City Hatters has a face book page and it says by appointment only, one would assume they are still in business. I would guess that by appointment only means it is more of a part time endeavor. Check it out.
