Hello folks.
As you can guess I have been away from ‘The Fedora Lounge’ for a long time. I was reading and gathering a lot of information a while back wanting a high quality Fedora. I bought four from Art over a short period of time, selling two that I didn’t think matched my clothing style after they arrived.
Now I am ready to sell the other two but not sure of their value. I have had them for @ ten years but they have been worn very little and it shows. One is Dove Gray and the other in Tobacco, a nice brown color and both in 7 3/8.
I am trying to gather info so if I am in the wrong spot or showing disrespect for this site I do apologize. But is there a interests in Art Fawcett hats today like there was when I bought them?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Art's hats are still very desirable as he is considered the "eminence grise" of hat makers even in retirement. My caveat is even though he is valued as a gentlemen and master hatter his hats have not appreciated in value. The market still sees them as 'used' hats. This is a good forum to sell items like this. Put it in the classified adverts, include a price and the market will tell you fairly quickly fair market value.

Those who know what they are will be interested. The value of a used custom hat is usually quite a bit less than the hat cost new.

Sometimes I need to remind myself that we are talking about used hats, it's not art and really not highly collectable other than to us eccentrics here, it's a used hat!!! Now that I've said that, if they were 7 1/4 I would be interested LOL.

I recently got a Penman hat made of pure beaver. The place I have the hat displayed gets hit by sunlight for a few hours a day. Could this sunlight cause any discoloration to the hat?

Thanks!

Any hat that sees regular direct sun can fade. A worn hat is more likely to fade evenly but a hat on display risks getting blotchy.
Yes, I have refurbished hats that I did not know how badly they were sunbleached until I removed the crown ribbon or brim binding. The bleaching can be massive and it dries out the felt badly as well. I am thinking the uniformly sun bleached hats were true working man's hat that saw sunshine all day. Not the sun a hat would see sitting on a shelf.

Hey friends. So, I found a hat on eBay that really suited my needs. It requieres a ton of reshaping (my god it looked awful out of the box) but I finally got it looking pretty good, I think. Not perfect yet. Still need some slight modification, but here we go
The crown was entirely off center and crumpled when I got it, and the brim was awful because of how flat it was. It looked so prospectery. I centered the crown, best I could, gave a tear drop shape, gave a curve to the brim, and a dip in the front. Here we are.

I still need to clean it, maybe replace the band, but the felt is 2563FE2A-684F-41AD-B442-5EC1B503092E.jpeg 2563FE2A-684F-41AD-B442-5EC1B503092E.jpeg F143F407-C9AE-43E4-AB2F-1905CC4517A0.jpeg clearly high quality. Working with it has been a joy.

Is this possible ?

Are the blank hats ( open crowns ) that will be made into teardrop styles different ?

Long story short, I want the oval style gambler I own to have pointed front like the "Stalker" hat from Red Dead Redemption 2 ...

I just received the hat and it's brand new from Stratton.

Right now it's hard as a rock and there's a plastic insert I'm not too happy about inside
the hat...

Thanks! I’m very happy. Merry Christmas for me. If I had jumped straight to getting a custom hat, it would have been all wrong, and a waste of money
I think that wise. It took me a few years to discern what I really liked and to get clear on what I would order in a custom hat. Saved myself a bunch of money and disappointment by doing the legwork and learning first before ordering my first custom.

Making the change as you describe it will be very difficult to impossible without the right equipment. You say the hat is very stiff so you likely need to soak that bash out of it and turn it back into an open crown BUT it will require a block in your size to get it right. You can take it back to open crown but it will need soaking and manipulation so it will likely not be uniform any longer. Without a block it will be tough.

This is the wrong hat to start with to get where you want to be.

@marisad Look up a Stetson "yancy " or the Stetson "black hawk". I think these styles are closer to what you want. Although the "revenger" has a hatband closer to what your looking for I think, but the crown is wrong. Also Google "gambler style hats"

First off let me say it looks like you have a nice hat there. I can see where you are wanting to go with the style and how close you are with this hat. I personally would just start wearing it. Go for walks in the rain/snow. Let the hat soften up naturally and start to make your changes gradually by moulding it a little at a time.
Hope that helps. Any more questions or want more input just ask.
Johnny
Wear your hat in good health.
