Like I said elsewhere, you gotta love a woman who performs under the name "Big Maybelle." She deserves her own thread for all the careers she launched. Care to post her direct progeny?

The girl groups of the 60's and all the soul sistahs who followed after all owe her something. Of course, Big Maybelle wasn't the only "mother of them all". You can't forget Ruth Brown, LaVern Baker and others I can't think of right off the bat. There were so many great female R&B singers; that being said, I'm a fan of Big Maybelle.

I too have been a Big Maybelle fan for a long time and smiled broadly when I saw this thread title. I was just listening to Goin' Home Baby this afternoon on my ipod; great song!! Thanks Bourbon Guy for the post, I'll bet it generates some new Big May fans from amongst Loungers who haven't discovered her Big, Soulful Sound yet.

I'm also a fan of Mabel Scott.

Helen Humes had some chops, as well.

Bump. Ouch! I hate it when that happens. It hurts when I roll off the back of that wagon.

Following threads. It takes you to unexpected places. You can follow the blues back through the slave hollers in the fields, or follow it even further back to Derry and Peebles. No matter.

This is just a little jaunt back a few decades.

So that Englishman with the flapping lips claims he woke up with it in his head in the morning. Right. We covered this in another thread on another site, but might be fun here too. Can't get no what?
