What are some of the best old movies where you can see some fine vintage dinner jackets, for example like Cary Grants in 'Notorious' (1946), and Humphrey Bogarts in 'Casablanca' (1942)?
Song of the Thin Man, last of the Thin Man series has a couple of swanky party scenes on a gambling boat. A lot of movies from the twenties up into the fifties had such scenes. The original Ocean's Eleven with Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack had one or two scenes in Las Vegas in full evening dress. That is about the last one I recall offhand.
The first Thin Man movie has a good black tie scene too: Nick Charles gathers everyone together to work out the murderer is and evening wear is the order of the day. He has a lovely early 30s style dinner jacket with white waistcoat.
Cary Grant movies generally always provide quality evening wear. Beyond Notorious, To Catch A Thief gives a nice relaxed 50s take and Suspicion gives us Grant in a DB DJ, as well as white tie and tails.
Finally, and obviously, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers probably provide more evening-wear in their movies than anyone else. Astaire wears a dinner jacket in most of them (if not white tie too).
