John wayne's hat bin the quiet man

Just been watching the quiet man and at one point John Wayne appears to be wearing a felt hat that is pinched both at the front and back...we're these once popular? From the front it just looks like a regular fedora/trilby!

It's not unusual to see that front-and-back pinch if you watch a lot of old movies. It wasn't the most popular crease, but not unusual either.

I saw a few John Wayne movies where he wore his hats that way. Mostly Westerns though...and in one of his other movies that co-starred Sophia Loren.

Yes, there was a felt hat with a diamond shaped crown. It was a bit more common with Irish people. The basic concept was similar to the crease that John Wayne used on the white hat in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and some other cavalry movies.
