Switching gears. I can't remember if I posted this one before, it's a very old (I think) hand forged full tang Bowie I found at an antique store for $25. I'm guessing the handle - which shows worm damage - is mesquite. The scabbard had a leather thong at the top and frills at the end, both of which crumbled before I got it home.

At 16" it is a short sword or machete, and is my go-to all purpose hiking blade.

The butcher knife reminds me of the ones my Portuguese grandfather made.

I agree, the Bowie looks to be old Spanish/Mexican make to me, but I'm grossly lacking in knowledge about this type of knife ;-)

I won this little hand made beauty after entering a whittling competition in a magazine (the Chap). My entry was one chosen to receive this penknife, it's made in Sheffield, with stainless steel blade, rosewood and brass handle. I have to say I am really pleased with it, seems to shiny to use in the woods

Per's blog is a very good source for Norwegian and Scandinavian knife traditions, he is one of the most knowledgeable world wide on these subjects. Mostly in Norwegian, and Google Translate is not too reliable on this subject ("blad" in Norwegian means both "blade" and "magazine" in English, for example), but a lot of great pictures.
