I dunno, Bolt -- I think the button looks pretty cool that way. It gives the lid a unique look. What can you tell us about the felt, etc.? I'm all ears to learn about Lion Lids! ;)

Cheers,
JtL
Sure thing Jimmy.
The felt is very soft and pliable, pretty light weight too, it only weighs 4.4ozs (almost 125 grms.). It takes a dry crease very well.
The dimensions are: Crown-5" (creased), Brim-2 5/8" with a 7/8" binding, ribbon-1 3/8, and the sweat-1 3/8" as well. The sweat is nice and thick, yet soft, not a cheapo. :D
Overall, I'm thrilled with it. I hope Garrett is as happy with the Barton. [huh]

More lids....

I recently purchased some hats from Alan, that sweet gray Mallory being one of them. There also were 4 more and a tweed driving cap, (6) total. They were too small for him. Anyway, here's what they look like after a good cleaning.

The Safari is a woolie, and it came with no ribbon at all, he and I both agreed that it was crying for a pugaree, all I had laying around was an old black one, so I threw it on. I think it turned out to be fairly nice, although I think a white one would look much better, maybe in the near future.[huh] Here's some pics.....

Next is a Resitol, I might swap the band on this one, undecided......

This is a nice shade of Green, the maker is Richards.

And lastly, is a Black telescopic felt. I can't make out the manufacturer on this one. The liner is faded. I'm hoping that Alan might know?

This one is the only one that didn't fit me....it's too large. It's a 7 1/4 and a really nice Lid, if anyone is interested in a trade maybe, let me know?

NOS Royal Stetson porkpie. Medium grey felt with matching thin ribbon binding. The 2¼-inch black ribbon has a 2½-inch back bow. The brim is 2-inches, and the crown is 3¾-inches in the back and 4-inches in the front. The leather sweatband is labeled on one side with the Stetson crest, the words “JOHN B. STETSON COMPANY,” and “Royal Stetson,” and on the other side with the store name “Meier & Frank. Co." and "PORTLAND - SALEM.”

Every part of the hat is in impeccable condition. The felt is supple and smooth with no nibbles, and the ribbon, edge binding, and bow are flawless with no loose or popped stitches. The leather sweatband is supple and with no cracks. The liner is unstained, again with no cracks. Inside the back of the sweatband is the original paper price tag with the name of the store and the price of $10.95. It is a true size 7¼, not shrunk with age, and it fits my 7¼ LO noggin like a glove. I don't know if I'll ever be able to bring myself to put a pin in it.

Great bash, rrog! It really gives the crown that "stove-pipe" look that vintage hats have.

Thanks Jauntyone and IC. I'd love to be able to say, "Yeah, I know. I meant to do that." But I didn't. It just turned out that way. [huh] Even a blind squirrel will find a nut every now and then.

It finally came. I like this a lot more than my brown hat. I wanted to give it a non indy bash. Just a center dent and a not so tight pinch.

Looks great on you UWS_Cowboy! I guess I missed the post where you describe this one, but what hat is that one?

Thanks, it is a Fed IV in carbon grey.

You mean that have them in stock NOW?!?

I ordered one and they said it would be the first of February before they had them in so I went ahead and go the dark brown one. I wanted the carbon grey. And now that I've seen yours, I really want one. BTW, it looks good one you.

Thanks, actually mine is a 59 and it was the last! It was between this and the moonstone but I found this one to be more versatile.

Here's my latest eBay purchase: It's obviously a Stratoliner which was refurbished quite some time ago. I'm thinkin' "Jay Bee" is J. B. Stetson's refurb dept., no?

You know, before this lid gets lost in the shuffle...

I have never seen anything like this before, and I think it is darn interesting. I agree with you Gene -- it sure looks like "Jay Bee" is code for "J.B." (as in Stetson). So, looks like Stetson may have been in the business of refurbishing lids and then re-selling them. What's curious is the phrase "or quality of equal value." Don't quite know how to interpret that.

Anyway -- quite aside from providing you with a cool lookin' Strat, I think this lid is an extermely interesting bit of lid lore...

Cheers,
JtL

Hey Jimmy. What I think it means is not that they resold them but rather, had locations where you could get your hat refurbished. A new liner and sweatband, etc. If you brought in a Stetson; "No problem, we originally sold it so we'll be willing (for a fee) to refurb it and place our 'Jay Bee' name on our work - - but if you bring in another brand, it had better be a good quality hat or we will decline the service..." That sort of thing is what I'm thinking.
