Two hats I was expecting came in this week. Both better than expected (and I expected something pretty good). As the English would say: chuffed to bits!

Mossant unlined homburg in brown grey. Size 56 with the brim at 5,5cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. Looks unworn and is quite lightweight for a homburg at 116 grams. It has a textured sweatband, which makes me think it is reasonably early, forties likely.

The other one is this one.

Barbisio Titan in a dark brown colour called Maia. Size 57 with the brim at 6,5cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. I own another one of these in a size 55 from the M. Hutter deadstock collection. I rarely wear that one because it's just too small. I expect to wear this one a lot more. Weighs 156 grams and has a great hand to the felt.

Two great finds, Stefan.

I can understand why you're chuffed to bits. Congrats!

I have found an older brand of Panama hats, still being made and sold from Cuenca, that have not been shown here before.

K. Dorfzaun Panama Hats was started in Ecuador by German-Jewish refugees. Originally sold in the US, the 1970's saw the family-owned company expand to other markets around the world.

Today, at Sherlock's Hats, in Jerusalem, I saw and purchased my first one. Half-off all hats due to war sale (unfortunately). The good news for them is they have mostly sold out of their winter felt stock with some Stetsons in larger sizes still available.

Akubra stylemaster arrived yesterday. The first thing I did was put a regular fedora crease in it. The colour is almost identical to my Borsalino, just a shade lighter.
Slightly wider brim, better fit, ever so slightly shorter crown. I think it will make an ideal daily wear hat.
(I also bought a Campdraft, but am still thinking about how to crease it. As well as whether or not I can pull off a hat of that size!)

Finally got an Akubra
The Longhorn. From the local RM Williams shop in London.
Here’s how it looks new.
It won’t stay like this for long as the brim is way too wide for my head shape.
Brim will get cut down a bit, I’ll sharpen the pinches a good deal. I’ll give it a bit more of a teardrop shape and curl the front sides a la Randolph Scott

Akubra Campdraft first crease, just a straightforward fedora crease. I steamed it first and am now wearing it while it cools down and sets. No wrinkles in the felt and a touch lighter an easier to work with than the FedIV.

Brim down looks like I have wings, it wants to have the brim up, but either way this is a big hat by my standards, and feels like perhaps it’s a little too big, but undoubtedly is a good looking hat in its own right.

Question for those with experience, given my face shape and build (5’7” 147 pound, fairly slim), would you stick with this crease of go with something else?

I think it looks great on you! I feel like the longer I wear a hat with a bit of a higher crown or wider brim than I’m used to, I usually start to feel more comfortable.

I’ll probably wear it out this weekend if I can do something with the brim to tame it. I kind of like the OR style of having it snapped up, it even compared to the FedIV that I’ve been wearing all winter it’s a stand out hat, an will take some getting used to.

I suppose the real test is whether my wife is happy to be seen in public with me, but she’s been tolerant so far.

Jeff, I know Roberto Dorfzaun going back to World Hat Company and when he was the sole American rep for Mayser and also Mayser's Ecuador connection. I will have to look back at my emails because I forgot most of what he wrote me.

When I got my Cedar brown Heritage Campdraft I was a little surprised to find the crown was almost a full inch taller than my older Campdraft.. but I got used to it pretty quick ( more time on the head will get you comfortably used to anything pretty quick).

I had the same issue with side wings standing up when snapped down in front on both. On one I steamed and ironed the brim flatter from mid crown on one side around the front and back around the other side ( left the curl up in the back). I do the same process on my hemp Stratoliners to smooth any funny brim bumps. On the Cedar brown one here I steamed and ironed the whole brim flatter and then worked it into a Austrailian style brim swoop front and back. A curved brim flange makes ironing and steaming simple, but you can do a good job just by steaming and ironing out the brim on a flat surface, and then gently adding a swoop with steam and bending the brim down by hand.

I did something similar with my FedIV and it definitely gave it a more Aussie vibe. Looks good and doesn’t seem particularly tall.

Creased now, my campdraft is about 12cm front and 11 at the back, about half a cm taller than my creased FedIV and the Stylemaster which is about the same.
The real difference is in the length of the crown and straightness of the sides compared to either of the others. It’s almost vertical all around and that gives it considerable presence, along with the wider brim. But I think I’ll keep it snapped up for now and let myself get used to the crossover style.

Back from a little 45 mile road trip to pick up a new hat. Price was right and seller agreed to meet in person for pickup ( USPS cant have THIS one for two weeks! lol). Nothing spectacular but its a nice late 90s Stetson G u n Club Roadmaster in Silverbelly. 5-1/2" crown 2-5/8" brim. They werent exactly for the best of felt back in those days, but its finished nicely, has a bound brim, and its a nice butter soft hat. Everything brushed off nicely and its a clean little lid now ( knocked a LOT of dust out of it) . For now, Ill leave the little leather hatband and buckle on it, but Im thinking two wraps of a thin round braided leather cord would look good on it.

As a little side info for anyone who runs across one of these older Stetson G u n Club line hats from back in those days.... Ive seen several that had the finish on the sweatband flaking off in places. If you gently scrub the surface with a toothbrush, all the finish will come right off and leave you with a nice soft suede finish on the sweatband. youll lose the G U N Club embossing but it looks good enough...Grungy finish to neat appearance in 5 minutes. Ill spritz a little suede conditioner on it before I sweat on it and leave stains

Made for a fun little roadtrip

This arrived recently. I had to give it a bit of a stretch, and I really only knew after I got it that it was intended to be a Jewish orthodox hat. I don’t know a lot about that tradition. As I don't want to misappropriate, if I wear it in public, I will probably put a more pronounced brim swoop in it, and a hat band, in hopes of not being offensive. But it’s a very cool hat and the Barbisio/Huckel/Habig names caught my eye.
There are very few Jewish people in my area, so if any of you out there would like to weigh in regarding how offensive or not it would be to wear this in a non religious way, I’m open to hearing your thoughts.

Not offensive at all and a really great repurposing. You can search me on the threads to establish my bonafides. Enjoy. Also, search Ferster. I discussed that hat seller a bit on here too.
