Thin Ribbon shots from movies

Thunder Bay

I was just watching TCM and Thunder Bay came on.
Guess what hat Jimmy Stewart was wearing when the film started?
Yep... it was my fave the Open Road style hat he wore in FBI Story.
I think it is the same hat only a little more beat up.
I wonder if the stars back then wore their own personal hats in the films they were making ?

Thanks for pointing that movie out.

Man, I love the way Jimmy Stewart wears his hats throughout the years. Now i need to watch Thunder Bay...and i need to get myself an open road.

Here's a question for RBH and fellow Open Road fans: If I have a stratoliner, do i need an open road? I know, I know, but aren't they very similar to each other?

I'll bet Stratoliners have lighter weight felt. Maybe narrower brim. I'm guessing.

Dean, I think you hit it. My Stratoliner has a narrower brim than my O R.
The Strat= 2 1/2
Open Road= 2 3/4
Marathon= 2 3/4
Also the felt on my Strat is thinner than the O R and Marathon.
There is just something about the photo from Thunder Bay that makes me think Mr Stewart could be wearing a Marathon.
Guess we will never be sure...

Favortie Hats

I don't remember where i heard it but there were some of the actors that did appear regularly in Westerns that had favorite hats, so it was not uncommon for a star to use some type of Western hat from movie to movie.

Wow, I haven't seen that one in ages. Hopefully I haven't missed it today working in the yard.;) Cool shot of those two. What kind of jacket do you think Mr. Stewart is wearing in that scene?

Cheers!

I just got a new computer, and can can now make screen shots !!!:D

SO.... here are a few from 'THE FBI STORY"
A great film with a fantastic thin ribbon, great crease and a great swoop on the brim.
If you can add to this [any thin ribbon from any film] do so!.

These shots look as if Mr Stewart could have given Indy a run for his money!!!
And in a thin ribbon!!!

What an odd topic for you to start. lol
:D

All of these new Campdrafts plus the Majors addition to the thin ribbon universe had gotten me back to my first love in hats [thin ribbon fedoras :D ]

I agree, RBH. Is that a 6-point bash?/QUOTE]
I think that's too precise. Looks more just like a punched in hand crease, more function than form.
I think you may be right DMan. Mr Stewart was a hat wearer and that crease looks to be [to me] a crease made by hand by someone that was used to wearing a hat.
Instead of a diamond it looks to be like the back crease is wide instaed of a point.

I'm seeing the front pinch and two side points mirrored at the back of the hat. In other words, it looks to me like there is a point at the back of the hat directly opposite the front pinch, and then two points to the side to open up the back of the hat a bit. Either way, something to consider...:) [If you didn't have a point at the back, it would be a pentagon bash!]

Cheers,
JtL
