Was just listening to a news report from VE Day and learned something new (at least new to me). VE Day was announced today, May 7 (in 1945), but it wasn't supposed to have been. Apparently, a reporter by the name of Kennedy somehow got the information that Germany had surrendered through the censors. Eisenhower, however, had said that the announcement would be made to the men in the field first and then presented to the world by the leaders of the Big Three. This wasn't supposed to happen until the next day because Ike knew that fighting would continue at outposts and soldiers would die. His main purpose for stalling the announcement was because he didn't want any telegrams on battle deaths having occurred after official surrender to go out.
