Family came up and we all took a tour of this winery. In 2005 it had been continually in business for 125 years. :eusa_clap Other vineyards are around it but I found it fascinating a family business stood for that long.
The tour stated during prohibition they stayed in business by growing cotton and was allowed to grow some grapes to be used by the Catholic church for mass. The wine tasting bar was gorgeous and had been brought over and was from about 1750 or so. The man in charge of the winery is also a member of The Brotherhood of the Knights of the Vine which I had never heard of and found interesting. One of 49 I believe worldwide.
So my ? is this. Is there a family business near you that has lasted this long or longer?

I'm the great-grand daughter of the founder of the oldest commercial shochu distillery in a prefecture called Kagoshima in Southern Japan :) My second cousin owns and runs it, and it has been in business since 1869--140 years :)

Japan in fact boasts a host of enterprises that have been in continuous business for more than 100 years, something like 12,000 and of these, over 3000 have been in business for over 200 years. The oldest enterprise in the world is a Japanese construction company that specializes in wooden temples and shrines whose history goes back to the construction of Shitennoji, built in 593.

So, our family's business, Shirakane Shuzo, being only a mere 140 years old, is still a youngster here lol lol lol

The original factory building that was built in 1869. Pic taken last year, and it is still in use. My grandfather's house used to stand on the further end of this pic, beyond the white building.

Wow, now that is what I am suggesting. I would think staying power like that can only be achieved by excellent business practices. Congratulations. :eusa_clap to your family.
