After buying the standard brim I'd be unlikely to go for the smaller brim. I really like my BGCD and will order the mid-brown in a while. I'm short with a thin build and like wider brims.

New CD on Ebay

Hello all. I'm new here and have been reading about these Campdraft hats. You gentlemen have about corrupted(convinced) me that I need a CD. Anyway I just noticed someone has listed an unworn CD size 57 in BG green on Ebay this afternoon. Just thought I'd let folks know. I have no connection to this listing and if it was my size I'd bid. I have bought my first Akubra and am waiting on it's delivery. Glad to be a part here. How difficult would it be to stretch this 57 out to my 58 head? I'm new to these hats.

Welcome, you have come to a place where that sort of corruption is accepted (and encouraged)! The general consensus about Akubras is they can run a bit large, but if they do, they will eventually conform to one's head. That may not always happen, as others have said here. There is no way to know unless you were to get it whether the Ebay hat is larger than the stated size or is true to size, or has shrunk to a slightly smaller size. Assuming that it is a true 57, stretching it up one size may be possible without a hatter's help. There are other threads here that discuss stretching-it-yourself, but you can risk damage to the sweatband, the ribbon, and possibly deform the brim. If a hatter does it, they generally will want to sew in a new sweatband because the original will then be too small. I have a Fed IV Deluxe that was slightly too large, but with steaming, wetting and reshaping several times it got too snug. I can expand it some with a stretcher or by steaming it and pulling it down really low over my noggin, but it has a tendency to shrink back to snug again if I try to reshape the brim with an iron and a flange. So I'm always fussing with it--if it gets too small I can stretch it, but if I do that it deforms the brim, then I steam the brim and then it causes the thing to shrink again. if I had a band block that would allow the hat to fit inside the hat flange I could put it in the hat to hold the size while I iron the brim, but I don't. It's becoming a real balancing act to this guy who is unskilled in the hatter's art. Still is a great hat, though. I just got a CD that is just a bit too large for me (I'm between sizes), but I'm going to keep the steam away from it to see if it conforms after some wear.

When I say "much to my surprise," I really mean that. I own a LOT of Akubras, and I have ordered 59s that were perfect, 60s that were perfect, but also 59s that were too small, and 60s that were too big. So I finally came to the strategy of ordering 59 and then putting them on an Art Fawcett band block to stretch them out to my 23 1/4 head. But this one, this CD, fit just like Art had made it especially for me. Good luck with getting a good fit, Zombie. It's just a roll of the dice.
And thank you again for sharing your experiences. I suppose such variables are just the nature of the beast, and I won't know with any certainty whether or not my hat will fit until it arrives. :yo:

"You have the right of it there," Zombie, as they say in Ireland. :cheers1:

Great silverbelly RBH.

Thanks for your thoughts on sizing Blackthorn. As someone who takes a generous 60 or a small 61 I'm waiting with bated breath.
