I recently bought a pair of AE's McAllisters in oxblood and was wondering how much of a difference there is with the Burgandys. There are also the Chile color and the Merlot. It would be interesting to see them all side by side. I also have a pair of the Leiden weaves in Chile, and it's much darker than the burgandy, a very dark reddish-brown.

  5. The colors are not even the same across models within their product line and they certainly change with time. Allen Edmonds uses different dye lots but gives them the same name. Makes buying online tough. Add to that the inconsistencies of owners calling the colors something different than what Allen Edmonds calls them and it's one confused mess. I know I'm guilty of calling them by the wrong colors. Merlot becomes burgundy which becomes cordova which becomes oxblood which becomes? To be honest, I don't keep boxes so I'm not sure what most of their officially designated colors are. The only colors im sure of are the the shell cordovan colors #8, #4, and whiskey, and all black.

  6. Have you looked at Meermin? I have a few and I really like them. They are more European in shape than Allen Edmonds, but I like that too. They have some of the best deals out there on Shell Cordovan shoes if your into that.

  7. Had not heard of them. Just checked it out, they look good. I think their boots look great

  8. If you are a medium width then you can't go wrong with Meermin. As my job has changed I'm not wearing the thin leather soled dress shoes as often, but their pseudo Dainite soles are great. They also sell overstock and returns on eBay under the username: goodyearshoes

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I'd always thought oxblood was a fairly dark brownish-red, but my new McAllisters are almost a dark mauve. I received a couple of admiring comments from my students about them: I hadn't realized they were keeping track of my footwear.

Apologies in advance for all who tune in for more of my vintage shoe acquisitions. This post will feature a "modern" pair of Aldens.

I would ike to introduce my new Alden gunboats. I retired my older Alden gunboats this morning, when these arrived. My cobbler had told me last time that 3 sets of soles and one half set are the "max" he could do. I really liked those gunboats. They have traveled in Europe, East Asia, northern climes and domestic travels. They had visited corp.boardrooms and local establishments and presented myself in class. Loved those shoes. Conditioned leather, shined tops, clean and spiffy edge treatments they were classy to my eyes. New insides(insoles and a small interior repair), by Alden after the second set of soles really made a difference over its life. I did not mistreat them, but they were well used.

On with the new. Black horween or shell Aldens replaced the oldsters. The solid weight, shank insole and leather insides are just what my feet anticipated. All expectations met. Like all of my gunboats I add a tongue pad. The pad gives a bit more cushion to the top of my foot. I have broken the bones in the navicular arch in each foot in different accidents and the extra cushion has them comfy. The last of these gunboats works great!

Shell. I have a vintage pair of shell gunboats and love them. They are just so cool looking-shiny with rolls. That was my motivation. Durability, ease of care - can not comment yet. Give me a decade and I will report back. By then I suspect they will have a replacement set of soles.

My vintage shoes are appreciated. Gently worn and proudly worn for special occasions. The Alden gunboats join a couple other gunboat pairs ( 2 Allen Edmond pairs and a pair of Florsheims) that are called upon frequently and in more diverse weather conditions.

Thanks for letting me share. On with the vintage show.

    best to all, Eric -

    Eric,
I remember all too well the dark day when you posted all those shots of your wingtip collection. They sent me spiraling down the wingtip rabbit-hole, much to the detriment of my bank account. Let's just hope my son can pay his law-school tuition next semester.

I tip my fedora in your direction this afternoon. Offer my best to your son. Law school - congrats he is a studious, smart fellow.

Wingtips, ahhh they are addictive. For me, I can vividly recall my Grandfather and fathers black gunboats. They are a big part of my memories of the best qualities of solid characters, dependable, caring men in my life.

Can't wait to see more brogueing and in general vintage shoes folks! Bring on the parade.

Much more European with elongated round toe (no chisel) that I prefer to pair with suits.
