rlk---put on a mask, and you could be Zorro. By the way, I think you are right, Estilo canero refers to "plantation style".

Nice Habig, Ken.

That was once a very cool style, for Spaniards. Think Fernando Lamas movies (for those of you who go back a distance). The low-crown hat is a very hip style in its way, not unlike a stingy brim nowadays. I've never seen a slick Spanish hat like that, all shiny and beaver. In their day, Latin lovers in film would woo American movie stars wearing hats like that and sometimes win. It's kind of a cool style to me.

This is the black Nostalgia I picked up at the Garland HATCO outlet, and its evolution into my hat.

It came, as you know, open-crowned:

This is the finished product after creasing today:

Not a good head pic but all I had at the time:

And yes, it is now missing the cute little Stetson tag on the band, which I had forgotten to remove when I started!

Looks good on you. You are another one who comes off well in the hats you select.

Wade, The Nostalgia in black really works! Is it normally available in black?

Its twin is in a Museum dated 30's but I really don't know... Appears to be a silk finish Beaver. I presume Estilo Cañero refers to a Sugarcane Plantation. No thread for Spanish Hats.

Thanks a lot for the comments guys, really appreciate it.
Is anyone familiar with Hopkins hats? Or could it be possible to determine the date, roughly, of my Milan Straw?
The lady I got it from was in her mid 40s I'd say, and said it belonged to her grandfather.

Very nice finds and they look great too! I do know there were a few straw hat companies out of Baltimore. I posted something a while back but I will have to look into it again.

RLK, love the ribbon work on that plantation. What is at the bottom of the ribbon. Looks like a trolley cord or is that the actual bottom of the ribbon?

Big crown-just over 5-1/2" with the center crease in place! Looks like the owner didn't wear his hats.

Actually appears unused. It is blue-gray--color is best on underside view. The felt is quite firm and holds its shape very well.
