For Wearing 'Golden Era' Vintage, Are Men Socially Castigated More than Women?

Probably. I went to the Greek Theater in LA last night and saw a male couple wearing really cool vintage (not sure how far back as I'm not that well versed in it) clothing. I dug it, but I imagine some looked at it with some "WTH is that about?" to heck with what others think. Women get more of a pass because men in general love women looking "hot" and vintage looks hot on women, sorry to make it sound so juvenile.

By modern era standards, a man who goes out in public with his shirt tucked in is an insufferable fop.

That's terribly funny. A friend of mines wife calls me "The Dandy" because I don't wear t-shirts, jeans in the wrong size with holes in them, always have a hat....in otherwords at my worst dress better than most at thier best.

If 2 guys are a couple, tho, they probably wouldn't care about any castigation. What would people say? "You look g...ok, guess I got that one right."

I do agree with Lizzie that it doesn't take much for a man to be overdressed these days - especially outside the financial and cultural capitals.

Nah, used to it maybe, care about it? We're all human.

Speaking in the bigger picture and not looking at regional prejudices, I say men are not more castigated than women. . "The Look"(call your specific era) is very different for ladies than for men compared to today.. Vintage female hair, makeup, dresses, shoes, etc. make it very hard for a gal to do her own thing and not stick out(for lack of a better term..). I think this holds true for dressing up and down. Vintage guys can blend in better if necessary.

What's "wildest" the average vintage inclined guy wears? A fedora, two-tone shoes, or a watch chain? It's the rare bird that sport the loud patterns clothing.

If I assume correctly and this conversation was inspired by this thread I would suggest the reason more men don't wear the wilder elements of vintage style is because they are uncomfortable/unfamiliar with mixing and matching pattern and not the result of social pressure.

I get more weird looks and a general feeling of being less welcome in vintage garb when I am in the suburbs. When I am in the city (especially in minority neighborhoods, but that is a different matter) I get nothing but smiles and compliments, except from a few teenagers.

When I was in Vegas last month I was easily the best dressed man (one woman at the buffet even told me that). Not because I was overly stylish but because all other men were dressing down. Anyway, I never received so many compliments before, from both men and women. Even construction workers on the street called after me that they dig my jacket when I was walking by. I really don't think it's a society issue but a self esteem issue. If you let your clothes wear you people will give you flak no matter what you're wearing, but if you wear your clothes well you'll get positive feedback.

I completely agree with this.

Fop. I was always more of a "Dapper Dan" man.

I think women have it a little worse from strangers in public places for name calling or dirty looks. I've been in the company of girls who were decked out in full attire and make up and other women/girls seem to feel threatened by it I guess or just don't "get it".
