Yes, John's hats are better.

You can't really get a dark hat lighter by dying it. I don't see how airbrushing is going to work and not look funny. But even the felt that John uses (the same as Adventurebilt who made the KOTCS hat) is darker than the on screen color, because it will fade with use and exposure to the elements.

mikieson, stick around here at the Lounge for awhile and you will get an education on hats and also on the art of hat-wearing. I'd say that to acquire a Fed IV as your first hat is quite an impressive initial step for a newbie. The Fed IV will change and conform to your particular look and style, which is one of the amazing attributes of this particular lid. If you are unhappy with it then by all means return it, or maybe even sell it. But you would destroy its resale value or your chance for a refund if you did anything as drastic as trying to change the color. Just keep messing with the crease and watch it transform over time into a hat that will end up being your own personal expression of the art of hat-wearing.

Thanks..I like my Fed IV..I just with the color was a bit more "brown"..thats all. AND as far as creasing and bashing..I did that just shortly after opening. Im a newb sure, but I did LOTS of research. Just didnt research the colors quite enough. its like I was telling my youngest son...99% of the world does not even know what Indy wears. Couldnt pick it out if they had to. All they see is brown hat, brown jacket, khakis, brown shoes, and a satchel..I told him you have to look CLOSELY at every detail. take your time when buying things to get that perfect look..AND what do you know, I bought a hat that was not the color I wanted..LOL..its amazing how BLIND we become as soon as we see something CLOSE to what we THINK is right.

Ive been wearing my hat since it came in..I like it..AND for once I feel RIGHT when wearing a hat. If you followed any of my posts, I stated I bought an "official indy hat" from the mall in summer of 2010. As soon as I seen it I said..OMG!!!thats an INDY hat!! I have to get it...BLINDLY..again..it wasnt an INDY hat at all..lol...SO over the past months I bashed it, steamed it, creased it,stomped on it in dirt, grinding it in dirt,a burn pile, smacking against trees, rocks, ect ect..you get the idea..WELL I was a "tad" happier as its "sort of" was looking the part. BUT in the end, it was still totally wrong..Just wasnt enough crown material to get it looking right. Well I would wear it maybe once in a while and just felt goofy. I hated it..thought everyone was looking at me laughing..and I just didnt like that it wasnt right..

SO here I am now..with my new REAL 1st hat..I like it..its forming to my head already..I feel just right when wearing it. Someone might look now but its looking at me for the right reasons I feel..:D

That's a great looking hat and it's a great place to wear it. I wish I had my Moonstone Fed IV when I was there in Oct.'09. I was wearing a fedora, although it was only a wool Jaxon C-crown. Back then, I didn't know the difference between wool and fur felt, but I did receive a few nice comments on it. I hope I have a chance to go back to Asheville, it's a great city to visit, with a lot to see and do.

Hi Blackthorne, what's the hat you're wearing in your avatar? Love it.
Hi WMC, I didn't see your question until just now, sorry. That's an Art Fawcett hat, based on the movie Tokyo Joe. That was my first hat by him, and I love it. He can make you an exact copy, if you want. Thanks for the kind words. :)

Thanks ECP, Ashville is nice and The Biltmore is a great location, and there is a lot to see. The Jaxon C-Crown was my first starter Fedora too, but I am glad that I now have several fur felts.

Is that grey with black band as it appears? What's the brim width and crown height?

Yep it is grey with a black band, and the brim is 2 1/4. As to the crown height, it's 4 3/4 at the highest point and 4 1/4 at lowest. I don't know what the open crown height that translates to, but Art would know. I'm sure he keeps records of all the hats he makes.

Hi again,

Just wanted to share my latest purchase - Fed IV moonstone. I did hesitate a bit when ordering another Fed IV as tapered look I am after requires pretty hard bashing. Well, not anymore - the hat in moonstone color looks absolutely stunning or what do you think?

fediv_moonstone.jpg

Ps. Those requested outdoor pictures about Fed IV in the Finnish elements are coming just when I get somebody to take the picture ;) It's -35 degrees Celsius (-31 degrees Fahrenheit I think) and scenery is absolutely stunning when the sun is shining on the forest and frozen lakes from clear skies!

Regards,
J

Yeah, I'm a big fan of the moonstone color, it's much nicer in person than you can see in pictures, too. Congrats on the new hat!

Just wear it everyday; out in the sun, in the rain... Do some jogging with the hat. The color will eventually fade to a lighter shade when exposed to the elements. Also, the Fed IV looks really dark indoors, especially when photographed.

Have you registered to COW yet? http://www.indygear.com/cow

You'll find that the Fed IV is one of the most popular Indy hat models because of its look and durability.
