The Underappreciated

Who or What would you say is underappreciated? And if you wish, why you feel as you do so about said Who or What. It could be Your Mom, Seth Rogan, Manners, or whatever you feel needs more Appreciation.

Print newspapers, especially since ours was shut down in the dark of night last night by its gutless publisher, throwing 56 long-term employees out into the street.

Long-term employees, for that matter -- the backbone of any successful business. People who know their work, know their market, and are committed to what they're doing.

Fels-Naptha Soap -- it's an ugly yellow lump that smells funny, but there's nothing in the world that'll get your clothes cleaner.

Cats. Without them the planet would be overridden with plague-carrying rats, and half the content of the internet would disappear.

Looking at the front of the NY Daily News every morning at the bodega, it's easy to see why it's under-appreciated. It has pretty much everything we rail against right here.

Manners, inded. Being rude, obnoxious and overly familiar does not make one, or the world, better.

Radio. It's just not what it used to be. Sigh. I miss radiodramas.

Hats, in general. Why on earth is it such a shock to people to see a person wearing a proer hat?

A lot of old-fashioned cosmetic products. They work great, they're not exactly detrimental to the ecology and they're usually cheap.

Introductions. Or is it that I simply under-appreciate being chatted up by complete strangers? :D

Paper letters. Yes, I know e-mail is quicker, I use it myself. But I miss hand-written letters.

And I'll agree with Lizzie - cats. :)

The underutilization and underappreciation of Manners by so many today was the impetus for this thread. I constantly preach
to my students how
manners are free and that they open so many doors for those who have and use them.
And most importantly, they make the World a much nicer place.

Skirts. People seem to find it strange when women wear skirts these days, but really, they're extremely comfortable and practical. If I were a man, I'd be jealous (or try to get it accepted for me to wear one).

Baking soda and vinegar. People use all sorts of strong chemicals to do jobs that could be accomplished a lot more effectively with baking soda and vinegar. Like cleaning pots. The oven. The bathroom. Unclogging the sink. And nothing gets your hair as squeaky clean as a little conditioner with baking soda, followed by a vinegar rinse to get neutralise the pH. I've even switched to home-made deodorant using (among other things) baking soda and it's a lot more effective than the store bought one.

Women. So many women like to brag about how they prefer men to women. I like women. I like men too (oh, do I!), but I think women are awesome. I especially like the old brand of women (in the Golden Era) who cared about what they were and what they accomplished rather than their appearance. I wish more young girls would be inspired by them rather than, I dunno, the Kardashians.

Self-depreciating humour. Honestly, can you think of one single dictator or fanatic who laughed at him/herself?

Terriers. I'm not saying they're not appreciated. It's more that they can't be appreciated enough!

Fresh air, sunshine, the great outdoors. Especially sunshine. They've just found out that as you age your corneas get a little yellow, filtering out blue light. Seems this blue light is necessary for your metabolism to regulate all sorts of body clock related functions. So make sure to get out and look at the sky for a while every day.

A kilt is the answer. Simple. Don't own one yet myself, but soon, hopefully.... Looking a proper kilt over the next few months, but I'd be tempted also to buy a black drill cotton option for wearing around the flat in warmer weather.

A lot of those old home remedies are disappearing - folks just don't know about them anymore, and given that the commercial secotr can make so much money selling us a product for everything.... Yay capitalism! ;)

I tend to prefer the company of women myself. Not a chocie as such, but typically I find them more stimulating than most men. I have no interest in either beer or sport, which are two things very much core to the identity of most modern males.

Self-depreciating humour. Honestly, can you think of one single dictator or fanatic who laughed at him/herself?

When the world is mine and you are all required to address me as dEar Leader, I like to hope I'll still be able to laugh at myself. Hopefully not in the mean-spirited, mocking way I currently do though. ;)

Meh. If sunshine was all it's cracked up to be, the Summer wouldn't be anywhere near so unpleasant.

I once bonded with a colleague over our mutual dislike of summer and sunshine. He made a really funny comment: "People who like sunshine are the same sort of people who like to cheer for the royal family!" I use that line nowadays to condemn those darn chirpy sunshine-loving people. :D

You're the first man I ever heard say that. If you liked beer, I would buy you one just for that. How about a martini instead? ;)

That's another underappreciated thing, by the way. A well-made martini. No fruit, no 'funny' name, no sticky sweet liquor... Just a perfect crisp martini.

The under appreciated are the people that come and help out. At church when we have an event it is always the same people that come and help set up stuff and help clean up and put away things afterwards. There's always a great turn out for the Easter breakfast, the same people show up and eat, leave their dishes on the table and split before the event is over but never help in any way.

It's the same with friends, let's say you went to the beach with a group of friends and discover your keys are gone as you leave. Chances are there's some that will wish you luck as they head for home and then there's others that will stay and help you look.

Service to others is often overlooked and simply expected by those being served.

Can you give up the information to me, and maybe the rest of the Lounge, what do you "really"wear under a kilt?

If the "powers that be" do not fix things soon (in the USA at least) we may all be missing the U.S. Postal service, and for me, they are very under appreciated. Also, I have to agree and add a "plus one" to what everyone so far has posted. There could have been a "poll" attached to this thread, I wonder if "good manners" would have won the vote????

The news of our local paper being shut down without notice after nearly 160 years is causing some severe ripples in the community. My mother called me this morning in tears -- "where am I gonna read the obituaries, where am I gonna see the pictures of the high school graduates, how'm I gonna know how the school basketball game came out, where'm I gonna get the coupons? They can't DO this!" A newspaper is as essential to the lifeblood of a community as Main Street itself -- and without one, you don't have a community. You just have a bunch of buildings.

PS -- they're also shutting down their website. We now have no reliable, professional source whatever for local news. So much for "new media."

I mean newspapers, not bird-cage liners. Although in the Era, the News was actually a pretty good paper, since Robert Maxwell's time it's become unreadable.

Yes, I do know what you mean, but the DN is considered a newspaper around here. But whatever good there may be inside is hidden by the awful front pages, day after day.

Lizzie, a place such as the one in which you live is very different from mine. I have always envied true small-town life. Your local paper is a life-blood of the community. Here, it's just another piece of background. I can only assume it is because big-media have made your local paper uncompetitive on a business front. Have you found the reason yet for the closing? Please report it here when you do.
