Spanish Fresco Restoration Botched by Amateur

An elderly parishioner has stunned Spanish cultural officials with an alarming and unauthorised attempt to restore a prized Jesus Christ fresco. Ecce Homo (Behold the Man) by Elias Garcia Martinez has held pride of place in the Sanctuary of Mercy Church near Zaragoza for more than 100 years. The woman took her brush to it after years of deterioration due to moisture. Cultural officials said she had the best intentions and hoped it could be properly restored.

The woman, in her 80s, was reportedly upset at the way the fresco had deteriorated and took it on herself to "restore" the image. BBC Europe correspondent Christian Fraser says the delicate brush strokes of Elias Garcia Martinez have been buried under a haphazard splattering of paint. The once-dignified portrait now resembles a crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic, he says. The woman appears to have realised she was out of her depth and contacted Juan Maria Ojeda, the city councillor in charge of cultural affairs.

Art historians are expected to meet at the church soon to discuss how to proceed. Mr Ojeda said: "I think she had good intentions. Next week she will meet with a repairer and explain what kind of materials she used.

"If we can't fix it, we will probably cover the wall with a photo of the painting."

The fresco is not thought to be very valuable, but has a high sentimental value for local people. Our correspondent says that to make matters worse, the local centre that works to preserve artworks had just received a donation from the painter's granddaughter which they had planned to use to restore the original fresco.

I don't really understand how she managed to do this without anyone interrupting her. How was nobody there to question what she was doing?

I've read the article from a few different sources (but didn't have a chance to read this particular article). Apparently, the priest gave her carte blanche. It was an utter failure on so many levels.

I don't like to tear someone down, especially a well-intentioned old lady - but her retouching is so horribly bad that it's almost shameful to even look at!

This news story was on the BBC radio last night, they describe the 'restored' image as that of a monkey. I can see why.

I hadn't heard that the priest gave her permission until this thread. I had thought when I originally heard this story she might have a serious issue going on- perhaps dementia or something similar. I kind of imagined her going to the church and going about her retouching while having a mental break.

I can't believe the priest gave her permission- had the local group that got the sizable donation for restoration not informed the parish and priest?

I couldn't find the original article I had been looking at, but this BBC article highlights that the woman thought the priest knew.

"(The) priest knew it! He did! How could you do something like that without permission? He knew it!"

My favorite bit:

That priest must be even more eccentric than the old lady or also suffering from dementia. Who in their right mind would agree to a random parishioner just doing restorative work? Crazy.

I understand that she had good intentions... but why not actually seek someone with artistic knowledge?

She had artistic knowledge since she was an art restorer when younger. :p What happened here is quite odd. This woman saw the damaged painting, the "Ecce Homo", at her local church and she decided to "restore" it on her own initiative. Bear in mind that she's an old lady and obviously she hasn't her mind ok.

When she realized what she had done, she was very upset and she apologized. I saw her on tv crying.

(The) priest knew it! He did! How could you do something like that without permission? He knew it!

Yeah, but in Spain the priest is not the owner of the church. The priest probably saw her working and he probably thought she was sent by somebody else. The archiepiscopate, the town hall...

The best of the whole history is the witty comments all over the internet; "My 6 year old daughter is an art restorer", "let her finish it, for heaven's shake", "turning an Elías García Martínez into a worthy Modigliani", "she's now trying to straighten Dali's clocks, hot weather damaged them", "her husband said when she uses make up she's a different woman ", "when exactly she realized the beard couldn't be improved more", "Welcome to handyman show, today we are going to restore a 19th century Ecce Homo".

Then, some guys are collecting signatures so the restoration work stays like this and a wine producer is labeling his wine bottles with the face. You know, after heavy partying, you come back home with the same face.
