Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Nutz! It is a sad state of affairs, but the market is what it is.
I am not sure that this listing in any way represents the market. I have yet to see one sell ANY whippet sell anywhere near the $1400 asking price. Right now they (ebay) also have a listing for "40's" Stetson 3X "Gambler" or "Derringer" model made for and sold by Eddie Bauer for $400. These are in fact from the mid 60's and they seldom reach $100. I often see outrageous prices listed for things on Ebay......sometimes for giggles I actually follow them to see what happens......Many if not all go on being listed month after month and never ever actually get sold.....I always wonder if it is a sort of status symbol of the seller bragging they own high end goods....kind of like those Million Dollar houses listed in the small towns that are listed year after year and never sell. I see this in Antique Malls too.....a whole booth of "High End" antiques with prices to match that sit there month after month as a sort of museum that never gets sold.........they do eventually go away when the owner dies or tires of paying the rental (storage) fees.......though I do know of two that have been there unchanged and unsold for over three years.....:rolleyes:o_O;)

I've been watching this one for months. I've made offers in the past which were declined. Yesterday I made an offer for $170 and it was accepted. Forrest Green Champ. It's listed as being 1940s but I would think 50s or 60s.

Hi Perry and welcome to the forum. It’s a great place with a lot of knowledge being shared by a bunch of good people. Over time you will find yourself drawn to certain loungers because of style and their posts. You’ll find you have the same tastes in colors, brim widths, crowns, ribbons, etc. Pretty soon you’ll consider them friends and feel like you’ve know them for years.

However, these same friends on the lounge can be your arch nemesis on eBay and other sites. Especially when it comes to vintage hats. Everybody wants to get that “rare find at a great price.” Some spend a lot of time and effort towards that purpose. For that reason we tend to not post current eBay (and other site) deals. So as not to draw attention and drive up the price. That way fellow loungers can get a better final price.

Of course if it’s the loungers hat that is being sold they themselves may post about it. Also current auctions are listed if for example, they are way out there price wise or are fakes.

No offense intended but wanted to give you that thought. I know your idea was to be helpful and I appreciate that.

Once again welcome to the forum. It is a great place and I’m sure you’ll make it even better. I look forward to seeing your post and especially your hats.
