Just A Hat Rack

For what it's worth, I had the same concern about the "yellow" in the whiskey color. Almost every picture of whiskey-colored Winchester felt seemed to have some yellow in it, but the hat I received from Michael Gannon a while back is not yellow at all, just a nice mellow mid-brown. I was fretting about the color choice until I received it, but I really like the color in person.
Your whiskey hat looks very nice and is a beautiful color. I worry that it will be too light compared to the sable color for my Indy. That's why I inquired about the coyote, because it's a shade darker. Oddly enough, I was recently reading up on coyotes and their color was described as sable. Who knows though, I do like the whiskey and just may end up with it. Maybe. I'm still waiting for the crystal skull to tell me what to do.

They are Winchester colors; however, I believe that coyote was one of the former proprietary colors from VS which now are available in sporadic runs but with a minimum order of 36.

I have a Winchester whiskey made by Northwest and it doesn’t have any yellow in it that I can see. Now pecan definitely has some green tones going on but that’s a whole different story.

Well shucks. I've really been racking my brain over this. I entertained pecan for a moment, but like you've said, there's just too much green in it. Rust seemed to be an option as well, but the pics I see of it in the wild has way too much red in it to my eye. I'll prob end up reluctantly going with the dark brown, but the whiskey keeps getting my attention whenever I seem to make my mind up. That's why I was interested in the coyote. It seemed to be a good middle ground.

Whiskey is currently my favorite felt hat color. Here's how mine looks in bright sunlight...

It's a "warmer" brown as opposed to a "cooler" brown, i.e. more golden than reddish. But as much as I like it, I'd say it's definitely too light a shade to be considered for an Indy hat if you're looking for an accurate representation.

That's a slick one Al. I like the contrast it has with the dark brown ribbon. It's too bad that Winchester doesn't have a slightly darker shade of brown that's lighter than their chocolate brown. If I go with the chocolate, I may have look into getting a black ribbon or something that's darker than the regular dark brown so they don't blend in with each other. Thanks for the advice.

What ribbon colors are people typically wearing with dark brown/chocolate felt?

Just as an example, there are so many different versions of brown, here represented by 'chocolate,' that it boggles the mind. The colors shown in the graphic, therefore, should only be used for the hats made by this company.

I believe the predominant ribbon color, or colors, for a brown hat is a matching or darker brown, and even black, or close to it. I've seen ribbons in the tan and cream families, as well, and they can look great on mid-to-dark brown, depending on the exact shade and hue of each color.

I'm not much on wild colors, but other colors could work, as well, i.e. - if you're a Cleveland Browns fan, an orange ribbon could be acceptable. :)

I agree. I've seen photos of "chocolate" hats that vary in darkness. I get that some batches may vary from time to time as well. The current offering from Winchester seems to be more of a dark chocolate than a regular or milk chocolate that I've seen from other companies. Insert all arguments for photo and lighting qualities.

I'm much more of a college football fan than I am the NFL, but the Browns are my team. Let me be the first to tell you that they have some ugly color combinations going on. No offense to those with brown and orange hats of course.

Gannon has a dark brown with a Copper ribbon on his site (looks medium purple on my screen), so I was just wondering about purples, deep maroon, burgundy perhaps.

Depending on the exact shades/hues I see nothing wrong with such color combinations. Once Mr. Gannon or any of the respected hatters here have an idea about what you want they will send you photos of the various felt/ribbon color combinations they offer so you can see and decide for yourself which you like best (keeping in mind, to quote Just A Hat Rack above, all arguments for photo and lighting qualities).

Yes, thank you. I have worked with Michael before and I'm working with Rick now and was just wanting to get a few more ideas. I change my mind every week as it is, so I thought, why not change it every day :)

I keep going from wanting a monochrome hat to having something with a ribbon that will really stand out! I'm sure I can have both, right?

If you go by what James Bond was issued (Ian Fleming Live and Let Die) it must be grey.
Johnny
True enough, a "snap-brim hat." We are not told the brand directly, though one of Mr. Big's henchmen describes "the Limey" (Bond) as wearing "a grey Stetson." Now it could have been an actual Stetson, or it could have been a case of dubbing all members of a class by the name of its best-known member, the way we do with Kleenex and Xerox.

Since this was the early Fifties, it probably was not a stingy brim. Interesting to think that Bond might have worn a Stratoliner. . . .

I'm not sure if it was the felt or the ribbon color that you were referring to, but some of the dark brown ribbons that I've seen appear to have a purple-ish "shine" to me.

The the answer is obviously to get two hats!

In all seriousness, though, maybe you go monochrome and then have the bow/knot style be the stand out feature. I can't find it at this very moment but there was a post just in the past week or two that I believe was from a museum display showing different stylings. Something more obscure would definitely make it unique and eye catching.

Yes, the bow is a discussion Rick and I are having as well. It can make a big difference. Thank you sir!
