You can’t judge a book by looking at the cover…

While writing a reply in the thread “New! ELMC Jacket Highway Star® Horsehide” I got a brainstorm to open a new thread:

You can’t judge a book by looking at the cover…

Edit: Or in other words: Certainly, you can have an opinion (cover), but is it based on experience (content)?

There are some, really well-founded connoisseurs and experts in this forum and some who think they are, forming an opinion without any real experience... claim to say as the leather jackets from FW are expensive (which is basically true, from the perspective of the average citizen) but has been taken out of context. (See my clarifications here: https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/new-elmc-jacket-highway-star®️-horsehide.97637/page-2#post-2560605).

Of course, everyone may have their own opinion but if I have an opinion that is not based on experience then I ask and do not make out...

I know there’s a point. Somewhere. I missed it.

After reading his other post on the ELMC thread i think he is having a go at people comparing FW and ELMC without handling both...
Apparently they are apples and oranges and should not be compared?

Bit isn’t the OP the one who drew that comparison? Now I’m even more confused!

Ha, ha, ha, that's what I thought, especially because English is not my mother language, as you can easily read. What I wanted to say is, before making any claims in the room, you should have the necessary experience... :)

Considering you are the only one who made a claim about ELCM being inferior to FW it is a strange thread to start...

I just wanted to express that the new ELMC jacket is an option but not an equal replacement for the FW Mulholland. I probably have probs to explain differences what I understand in "option", "alternative" or "replacement" in English ;)

Originally, I just wanted to express that the two jackets look alike. But when it was said in a reply in the other thread, the ELMC jacket was an "alternative", which I probably mistakenly understood as a "replacement". In fact the two jackets are fundamentally differ, in particular because of the leather used. Finally, there is a reason why the FW jacket is twice as expensive as the ELMC. What I tried to explain in the other thread about how shinki HH is tanned, hence the titel in this thread "You can not judge a book by looking at the cover ..."

To me, and believe me I’ve been guilty of it myself, these arduous comparisons are what make this place a bit unbearable at times. But yeah. Shinki is Buddha, CXL is Shiva and I guess Vanson is, I don’t know...Krishna? Oh I forgot, Thedi is....Zeus.... of course. I mean Theo even looks like Zeus.
I suppose I see the Elmc as a perfectly viable alternative to the FW. Despite some differences both jackets achieve the same aesthetic. One could argue personal preferences all day long to no end. But why? Can’t they both just be really nice jackets wishing they were a CAL LAPD?;)

I am with you, absolutely. Also, I'm tired of reading over and over again that or why Shinki HH is so expensive. I just wanted to explain the reason why that is, nothing more. Of course, all mentioned jackets manufacturers are top, have their own, wonderful leather. There is no ranking like "Budda", "Shiva" or "Krishna" for me too...

What I do not understand is that certain people do not want to understand when a job can be done in a similar working environment in one day and another job takes a week that there have to be a difference in price? These are simple marketing rules, isn't it?

Thing is, after handling as many jackets as some of the people on this forum have... Well, you come to a realization it's basically all just the same thing.

Again, it's not rocket science. You have dead animal skin, textile sheet and thread. Few snaps, couple of zippers... That's that. Leather can differentiate only so much, stitching will for all intents and purposes appear the same until you pull out a magnifying glass...

In short, after handling enough leather jackets, you know what to expect.

In even shorter, there are no fundamental differences between quality leather jackets.

It's all in your mind.

It’s just the same story as the t-shirts thread to me.

Both a $3 and a $100 t-shirts are just cotton held together by some thread but I don’t think the difference is just in one’s mind! There are palpable differences!

The key is finding the quality/price ratio that works for you! It’s clearly not always the most expensive item.

Someone seems to imply that the price differential between the Mulholland and the Eastman is just hype. I don’t believe that.
