What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Day 15 of 31 Hat Parade: In celebration of National Straw Hat Day, I felt compelled to wear the everyman summer hat from the last century. Strange, there were no other men in Safeway who were celebrating with me, so sad. This straw Boater is from the early 1950s and made by Dobbs. This type of hat has been in constant production for over a century, you can buy them even today. The tie matches the hat and is early 50s as well. For some reason, I was the only person out there with a tie as well. What is society coming to?

Wonderful Mike. Love the whole look down to the pocket square. Makes me think of a gorgeous Crofut and Knapp boater I missed on earlier this week. Happy Straw Hat day!

May 15th - National Straw Hat Day. The origin of Straw Hat Day in the United States is not clear. Jack Lambert, owner of perhaps the busiest hat store and mail-order hat company in the country, JJ Hat Center in New York City, said it "probably was a promotional gimmick of the hat industry in the 1920s."

Historically the date changed; A New York Times editorial of May 20, 1908, fulminates against those wearing their hats earlier than June 15, which was Straw Hat Day that year. Another Times article, this from September 16, 1900, indicates that September 15 was Straw Hat Day, and that those who did wear straw hats had them destroyed, particularly on the stock exchange.

In any case........In honor of the National Straw Hat Day I wear a Newt at the Royal Montecristi.

Well done, Mike. Good to see someone respecting a fine tradition. Your fine example may show others the error of their ways.

Stefan, Thanks! Yes definitely some very hot + tight situations.

Super looking "Mylord Rein Haar"! Again another mystery on the company. The liner label reminds me of Dermotta Wien.
Thank you, Steve. That would make it Austrian and out of place. Let's give it the benefit of the doubt; it was German speaking for certain.

Glad to see someone join Mike @Redfokker in the tradition. And not doing it by half either. Superb, Eric!

This week I will feature various shades of Grey German and Austrian Velours. Most will be from the 1930s.

S. & J. Fraenkel Wien, Open Crown 5 1/2 inches, Brim 2 1/4 inches, possibly 1930s. This is a great example of Velour Soleil (Sun) where the soft long hair tips are clipped off and the hair is ironed all around which in turn reflects a lot of light. The super pliable (only a soft touch required to form) Velour Soleil is a fantastic Steel Gray color. S. & J. Fraenkel Wien / Ebreichsdorfer (Austria) Filzhutfabrik were one of the finest producers of Velour in Austria. I will leave the rest to the photos.

"Fraenkel Wien" Mirrored Display Stand, date stamped May 2, 1931. This was a fantastic gift from Daniele.

The same exact S. & J. Fraenkel Wien Crest as the above hat (see 2nd liner photo).

The handwritten date over the Italian Revenue Stamp is May 2,1931. Thanks to Daniele for the clarification.

Wow. Looking good sir.
Thanks Joe.

Differences between homburgs are often very subtle, but I really like this one, Fabio.

Thanks, Michael. Wegener has quite a bit of variation in their hats. The "colonel" line is high quality, so if you find one, buy it.

Great combo, Michael. Wonderful colours.
Thanks Stefan

German week three, day fünf.

Mylord Rein Haar (or Rein Haar Mylord; that's a bit unclear).

Colour is called "schiefer" (slate), which is a very nice blueish grey in this case.
