Thanks Douglas. My dad said he didn't wear the side cap much, so it is in great condition. The officers' hat is in good condition as well except for some wear on the sweat band. Too bad he didn't get to keep his flying helmet.:( The RCAF look very much like the RAAF caps. But that is to be...

finally got some pictures. These are from Royal Canadian Air Force, WWII. The first one was issued to my dad when he was enlisted as an aircraftman. The second he received when he was promoted to an officer.

Next time I go to his house I will take some and post them.

Great pictures. My Dad was in the RCAF and flew in a bomber. I've seen pictures of him with a similar flight helmet. He has his officers hat which I hope to inherit some day.

Thanks for the advice. All help is welcomed. But I'm not exactly sure what is meant by "rake". Is it the way the crown slopes to the back?

I am no expert on wool hats but anything wool will shrink if heated when wet. I would think it is like a wool sweater and should be left in a cool place to dry.

If you are rough with your hats the wool ones are the best choice, but do some people also buy wool hats for ethical reasons?

I used a cloth tape measure and chalkboard chalk to mark the brim. Then used upholstery sissors to cut it. After cutting the brim I used very fine automotive sandpaper to round the cut edge. You just have to cut slowly to ensure a nice continuous curve. Thinking about curving the back up...
