There's no way in the world that that is a 3" brim. I doubt even 2 5/8. My guess is less than 2 1/2.

I think many of them don't want to mess up their hairstyles. Older women still wear hats in my family and especially on Sunday, it's a tradition.

Speaking of women and hats, with the passing of Dorothy Height, the topic of hats came up because Ms. Height was never seen without a hat:

Indeed. I saw the press coverage on her, and I see that that is part of her persona. I've also seen the Sunday hats of the older ladies going to the Washington area churches. They are daring in fashion, but it's too bad only the older generations venture there. I wish a few women would wear a few well-chosen felt hats (or straw like you just posted) around to sort of propose a new look. People copy each other, though only if the new fashion looks good. A lot of people wait for permission from other people before adopting a new style. If they see somebody else doing it, and it's OK, then they might try it. You no doubt have enough hats to inspire an army of followers, so I hope people copy you. The items you have posted that I happened to see are all very promising hats.

It definitely didn't look like a 4 1/2" crown to me either, or a 3" brim. I was also thinking 5" crown and between 2 3/8" or 2 1/2" for the brim. I would have had less trepidation if it had been a size 7 3/4. I can get away with 7 5/8 sometimes, but it's likely it wouldn't have fit well. I'm just glad a lounger got it.

Thanks Dan. I agree. In the meantime, I'll just bask in all the attention I get as one of the few women who wears vintage hats on a regular basis. :cool2:

While I don't doubt the guess, what's your source for those dates?

Borsalino used unreeded sweats longer than most people here might guess.

I asked the seller if he'd ship abroad and got, and I quote, "No pls retract any bid you may have. I do offer a buy it now for Europe at $150" as an answer [huh].

No idea what he was going on about with the BIN but I decided not to bid as my requests for clarification went unanswered :(.

I've been collecting ads for hats from old newspapers, especially a lot of Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times, for about 6 months.
I will eventually be able to scan them all and share the ads - but not sure when yet.

The earliest reference I have foudn to the Pesca is Fall 1952, referring to the peach finish and narrow bound brim. The one pictured was $30. As it says, Pesca is the finish of the felt not the style so I imagine there were more. I'm not saying pesca didn't feature earlier than this.

The last date I have is december 1968 and it mentions that the Pesca is $32.50 (could be just the shop selling it for more).
