Huh? [huh] Just so I understand -- you are buying a custom hat from Art, but you don't want him to do any finish work on the felt?

lol :arated:

Yeah...that somehow doesn't sound right...

By the way, what kind of finishes is Art capable of? Or is that something I/we should discuss with him privately, lest his competitors are watching?

I'm sure Art will explain regarding finishing. An unfinished body, aside from looking...unfinished--looks rather dull in color compared to the finished product-like unpolished granite(less dramatic of course). If you are looking for a shag, satin or silk finish, that involves additional processing-not lack of finishing. If you are going for a primitive, hillbilly, homemade look maybe unfinished is really what you want.[huh]

Hey guys this might be a little :eek:fftopic: but I was wondering since I now have one of Art's works of art and actually know what a fine quality felt should feel and look like .... If you compare my VS hat to my Jaxon or any high end Stetson by VS felt is soooooo much better. My question is for those of you that have a VS and a good example of vintage felt ... are vintage hat felts of the same quality as what Art puts in his hats???? If this was the norm back in the day .... wow!! Guys were really spoiled with some great hats!!!!

Kk
It was in no way the norm back in the day. You could buy 'em that nice, but not a whole lot of people sprung for an all beaver hat back then. Most would have been wearing much cheaper stuff- rabbit and hare fur mostly. Think a royal stetson type quality.

Have you ever seen unfinished felt? Please pardon my intrusion, but part of the art of hatmaking is finishing the very rough hat body to a final beauty. Leaving it unfinished will affect the color and look of your hat. I encourage you to reconsider your decision. Just MHO.

Which is why it would surprise me if Art actually let such a hat leave his shop -- lest someone were to come across it and think it representative of his work.

Then again, perhaps this is part of a new marketing approach by Art -- The DIY VS Fedora...:D :D :D

Neo, You may want to check out the Monteagle thread. There are some shots from Winchester that show the dramatic difference. If it's a rougher/coarser hat you want then you can get three from Akubra for the same price as one from Art. I own Akubras and they serve a purpose in my rotation. It's kind of like buying a Corvette with a one speed transmission, all that unused potential. Just my opinion of course. You head, your hat, your money.

It's just that I don't think I've ever seen a VS without a finish...It just sounded odd that someone wouldn't want a finish on their hat, especially at that price.

let me quote Art from an email.

"Rough finish works for me!!"

it is going to have a finish, so i apologize for writing that its going to be unfinished no sanding, what i ment was it is still going to have that fur look too it. An example is an Austrian hat, the ones they use when hiking. But i'm doing this to a fedora that i designed. Those of you who have seen the movie Get Low, Robert Duvall's fedora that he wears has a rough finish to it. Here is a photo.

i hope this explains it better. if not i hope Art can go into more detail of where i'm going here. This hat at no means in my opinion will risk his reputation. I think this hat is going to look like what i designed and am looking for in a CUSTOM hat. If i'm coming across strong i apologize, so when i get the hat i will post a photo to the hat Art has created for me. Art likes the idea, so guys be patient with me, and understand that Art is an artist, he knows what he's doing.

i think RLK knows what i'm meaning here, i don't though consider it as a hillbilly type of hat, i think it can still look classic, and can work with a classic style. So i apologize for the wrong words with my explanation. its a rough finish.

Ohhhhhhh lol. Put in that perspective, this actually does sound like a cool idea. Sorry if any of my comments were discouraging, I simply didn't understand what was being explained :eusa_doh: .

Good luck on you hat, Coble! A "rough" finish in the lighter Savannah color ought to look really cool!

Well, it looks to me like if you are going to open up a can of worms for dinner you might as well have them chocolate coated. ;)

Coble -- I feel pretty certain that none of the comments about your project (including mine) were meant as a "burn" in any way. :)

To be fair though, your first description made it sound like Art was going to slap an unfinished piece of felt in a box and send it your way... :D Your more detailed description is very interesting -- and I'm sure that we are all eager to see the result of your collaboration with Art. Good luck! ;)

jimmy you know i took that feeling burned out of my post, because well it was my fault i explained it wrong. I know no one is trying to burn me, it was a retaliation feeling when you get comments as a did about spending the money on a hat, but again my fault on explanation., thats why i took the part about feeling burned out of my last quote. Sometimes it can be difficult to explain things over the internet. This is why i posted a picture, i hope it helps in the explanation. I do hope you guys enjoy what we are creating. I am also apologizing,so sorry guys. Its just what i have in mind here is different, its not the normal thing you would see. My next hat by art will have a smooth like granite finish, but this one i wanted it to have a rough finish. again i apologize on the horrible description.

well Art didn't supply the reference, i should have posted the picture with my explanation, i posted the reference to explain what i'm going towards. Because words can come across wrong. Sorry to confuse everyone, it sure got a discussion going didnt it, i wouldn't spend the money to have unfinnished felt on a hat. Rlk you knew where i was going towards. Guys i'm just excited for this hat, and it was my bad to get all defensive. I hope when i post this beautifuly Art piece that you all enjoy it as much as i do.

crh definately going to town
