Have You Ever Met A Movie/TV Star or Celebrity?

When I used to work for a limo company in Seattle I drove Naomi Campbell out to Bellevue once. Wasn't impressed with her, thought she was a cheeky little sh... well, she wasn't very nice. Met Linda Evans at the airport once, but another driver had the privilege of driving her. One other time I drove some big-deal DJ to a night club downtown. I had no idea who he was, don't remember his name, but he had autograph hounds and paparazzi chasing after him, which seemed rather strange to me because all they do is spin platters, but I guess some of them are like rock stars. All I remember is he tipped very well, in cash, so he was ok in my book!

L.A.'s the Place

Living in Los Angeles has provided me with several opportunities over the years, but many where not encounters, but rather mere sightings. Among those I have actually met: Dustin Hoffman, in a bagel shop; Mickey Gubatosi, (a.k.a. Robert Blake) and John Byner, both of whom I waited on in J.C. Penney's; fighter Lou Nova at Knott's Berry Farm (when it was free...); one of the Cowsills, with whom I went to junior college with; David Doremus (the boy in Nanny and the Professor) and Fern (can't recall last name, but voice of Lucy in Peanuts cartoons in the '60s), both of whom attended my high school; Jay Leno and Peter Fonda (very nice guy), both at a motorcycle charity function where I was part of a military color guard; Jackie Cooper, Eddie LaVeque (last living Keystone Kop), Buckwheat, and Jay "Tonto" Silverheels at the old Columbia Ranch; and perhaps my proudest moment, Mr. Ed at the Glendale YWCA.

(Does Pres. Bush I count as a "celebrity?" I met him at a USO show just after the L.A. Riots in '92.)

I've met quite a few z list celebrities and far too many politicians to remember through my work, but for the more notable ones...

I met Tony Blair a few years ago, wasn't sure how I'd feel about him, but he was an absolutely lovely guy, very genuine and sincere. I have to admit, I've had a bit of a crush on him ever since. (Is there a thread for embarrassing crushes?!

)

I know Nigella Lawson through family and social connections and I have to say, she's one of the nicest people I've ever met! And it goes without saying, is stunningly pretty! (See 'Girl Crushes' thread, lol)

Helen Mirren - Hmmm. Not much to say on this one. She came into a store I was working at in Toronto and was incredibly rude, possibly spurred on by the fact that neither of us immediately recognised her. She swooped in wearing a long black coat, a huge black hat and the most enormous sunglasses I've ever seen.

Pat Monahan - We sat and had a drink with him and the band after a gig. Lovely group of guys, really chatty and friendly.

Alex Rodriguez - Hit on me in a club in downtown Toronto after a Yankees/Blue Jays game. Not being a huge NYY fan, I had no clue who he was, told him to get lost and then accidentally stepped on his foot in my stiletto heels. He deserved it, but my then boyfriend made a joke about having possibly just taken him out for the season.

The closest I've ever "met" a celebrity was standing a couple dozen feet away from Jersey Shore's J-Woww at a book store, a month ago, with her signing autographs for her new book. I know a cousin of mine did have the opportunity to shake hands with Jack Nicholson, though.

Living in California like a lot of the others here, you see all kinds of famous people, but I've met a few.

I spent my teenage years in Santa Barbara being buddies with Chris Shiflett that later ended up being in the The Foo Fighters. After I moved to Virginia he called me up and invited me to hang out backstage with them, so I met and hung out with the whole band backstage and on the tour bus. Everyone was really nice. Ironically they were opening up for The Red Hot Chili Peppers who I avoided, because of an earlier incident....

In my 20s I used to hang out at Johnny Depp's club The Viper Room, the same bar that River Phoenix died in front of (my friend was there that night) and because my best friend was a club promoter I was able to hang out in the VIP room which was in the basement, if I recall. Anyway, Anthony Kiedis (lead singer for the Chili Peppers) was always in there picking up girls and making cheesy remarks, but would never talk to my friend. So after quite a few cocktails I walked up to him and said to him "Although I'm not a fan, my friend is and would like to meet you." He just laughed off the remark, but it must have bothered him, because about 6 months later my friend ran into him and he said "You're friends with that girl that doesn't like me" lol

Aside from that, there's a few more memorable ones... I stood next to and chatted with Tiger Woods waiting for a table at Roy's in Spanish Bay, Kevin Costner flirted with me when he was in town for the Pebble Beach ProAm (he was well known for flirting with all the girls in town, so I just laughed), Clint Eastwood was always talking to me and my mom when we were at his restaurant Mission Ranch (dirty old man), my mom patted Don Johnson on the head when he was kneeling down to talk to someone at a table and said "while you're down there" and the whole table broke out in laughter (I about died) and we had a really nice conversation with Bryant Gumble right after he had left the Today Show. Nice man, but much shorter than we had thought.

My mom dated the manager for Santana when she was a teenager and one of the Beach Boys. In high school I dated Robert Mitchum's grandson Spencer and George Peppard's son Chris.

There's others, but I can't think of them right now.

Living in the Los Angeles area of southern California, I've seen a lot of celebrities but have had the opportunity to actually meet very few. Among the more memorable:

Kurt Russell. In the early 70s during his "Dexter Riley" Disney film days. He was dating the older sister of one of my friends at the time, and he hung out with us while she finished getting ready for their date. Nice "down to earth" guy with a great sense of humor.

Richard Simmons. My wife and I were at Los Angeles International Airport. She was on crutches because of a knee injury, and as soon as Mr. Simmons spotted her he literally ran over to ask about her injury. He got the basic details and offered some advice on how to rehabilitate her knee, all the while making jokes about how he "knew" I had injured her. He's a very sincere person--what you see is what you get. His traveling companions weren't too happy though; they had to continually "reign him in" (as he stopped to talk to several people along the way) because they were concerned about missing their flight.

William Schallert. At a convention last year. He was at one of the guest tables with Warren Stevens and very few people were stopping by, so my friend and I were able to have a nice leisurely chat with him. Truly one of the nicest people I've ever met.

John Astin. Also at a convention, several years ago. He was there for a reunion of the remaining cast members from The Addams Family tv series, and I ran into him (not literally) on the sales floor afterwards. He seemed to be genuinely appreciative that so many people showed up to remember "such an old show", and had great things to say about Carolyn Jones, Ted Cassidy, and Jackie Coogan.

Vincent Price. One of my fondest memories. About a year before Mr. Price died there was a special screening of Frankenstein at the Alex Theater in Pasadena, CA, and Mr. Price, Mae Clark, and Sara Karloff (daughter of Boris Karloff) were on a panel to discuss their working and personal relationships with Boris Karloff. After the screening I had the opportunity to meet and speak with Mr. Price briefly. He was rather frail physically, but mentally as sharp as ever and appeared to be very pleased that so many people wanted to meet him. Charismatic doesn't begin to describe Vincent Price; in a crowded theater lobby, he spoke to everyone individually as though they were the only person in the room with him.

I met James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins not long before he left the band. He was a very quiet but polite and a down to earth person.

Got to meet Doc Watson after one of his shows a few years ago. He was very polite and down to earth but anything but quiet. He seems to be the type that never meets a stranger. I could have talked for hours but he was noticed and a line started to form...

I went to the courthouse to see him, but will have to admit it was primarily to see Jimmy Stewart. After the speech, I had an opportunity to shake hands with Mr. Stewart. Mr. Stewart was exceptionally pleasant, and spoke to me as if I were the only one there. I remember Mr. Reagan as being somewhat distant and not easily approachable. If I would have known Mr. Reagan would eventually become President, I would have made more of an effort to try to shake hands with him. [huh]

Several years ago I was involved with some special training with the Department of Justice in Anniston, Alabama. After the day's classes were over, I was sitting at the bar in one of the old BOQ's when Attorney General John Ashcroft came in and sat down beside me. He was there to review one of the first series of "COBRA" Incident Command training. We talked for a while and had a couple drinks. He was a very interesting man to talk with.

I remember being in Aniston back in the mid 90's for some DOJ training. No celebs there then, but some good training. As far as meeting celebs I worked off-duty concert security for Bryan Adams back in 1992 and got to meet him and the rest of the band. The drummer had a brother who was a LEO in CT and we talked for a while about the job. They were all very nice and humble.

I have made several traffic stops on several of the Carolina Panthers players. I also once stopped Cedric Maxwell (retired NBA). He was very polite and nice to talk with.

Let me see. Use to wave to Neil Finn when I ran past his house when I was on vacation in New Zealand.

Shook President Ford's hand at McConnell AFB, KS in the 1970's. He went down the line and shook everyone's hand in the pouring rain. He hit my mom in the forehead.

Brad Williams (Carlos Mencia sidekick) blew off Carlos and some AF Brass to eat at my crew table after myself and my pilot yelled for him to come over. This was in Kuwait and everyone was insanely jealous. Cool dude.

Colonel Hackworth at a book signing. Gave him my unit coin.

Michael Hedges (guitar player). Shame he died, he was a fantastic player.

Joseph Galloway at a book signing. Really nice guy.

For a couple of years I dated Faith Ford's ("Corky" on Murphy Brown- an oldie to most of ya'll :eusa_doh

sister in NYC 25 yrs. ago back when Faith was still on the Soaps. She is a tall, traffic stopping stunner, just like her sister. Very funny girl & a great actress. I liked Faith too!

I grew up w/ the guys from REM. I remember the morning after Lennon was shot, coming out of my cheap apt. only to meet Bill Berry coming out of his across the way & both of us being in shock. They all came to parties at our house c. 1982-83. I used to see 'em play for a buck at Tyrone's O.C. , back when they couldn't even end a song on the same beat! lol (PM me, I'll send ya' the bootlegs) Ditto w/ Widespred Panic at The Odyssey on Lumpkin St. We called the bar the "ShOdyssey, 'cause it was such a dump. Still can't hear WP w/o thinking I smell vomit & sawdust! *yucky*

Shook Keye Luke's hand at a revival of some Charlie Chan movies. Got Bob Keeshan's autograph and then lost it. Met Marian McPartland and Jimmy McPartland backstage. Does being in a crowd of college kids being addressed by Shirley Temple Black count?

I sent a letter to Mr. Luke when I was just a little girl asking him for his autograph, which he sent so kindly with a very sweet inscription - I had such a crush on him (and still...)!

I dragged my other half (a keen musician - and not so keen Yoga practitioner) to a Yoga Show, and who should cross our path but Mr. Jimmy Page. I had to almost forcibly restrain said other half..."Don't you dare bother that man - I'm sure he's here to relax, not to be rushed by adoring fans!" I don't feel I've deprived him of much, as he's such a four-flusher when it comes to things like that that I'm sure that story was much-embellished when he got to the office the following day...

My parents knew Ted Cassidy(from the aforementioned Addams Family) when they attended Stetson University in the 50's. He played basketball for Setson (imagine that).
