Black Fairmount Genuine Fur Felt Fedora

Those velours look grand, Robert! Funny, my mother just purchased a black velour fedora from an antiques store. And much to my surprise, she put aside the family-imposed hat buying freeze and let me add this to my collection:

It's a Fairmount fur felt fedora, the first vintage hat I've bought. The crown is nice and straight with a fine-looking diamond crease.

The felt and ribbon are both in great shape.

Does anyone know about how old this hat is? I have no clue, but could provide additional inside pictures if they'd help.

Not such a great photo, but I'm rather pleased that the rather short brim looks decent.

Looks good, Steven. Where did you find it? (I'd hazard a guess of late 1960's.)

It was at this antiques mall in Allentown, PA, called Weil's. The hat is in such nice shape (sweatband wrinkles are all I can see wrong), so I'd guess it's not terribly old. Thanks for the much-more-educated-than-I guess!

It is 2-1/8" wide.

We've seen a bunch of different styles, but I don't recall one with those proportions.

That rollable looks great. I should probably try to find something like that for taking on motorcycle trips.

That does look great Mike. Congratulations on the find. I can't believe how good it looks once it's unrolled. It's hard for me to understand how that works. Is the felt just really, really soft?

I spent quite a bit of time on mine steaming the crown and brim flange. I don't believe that these were designed as "rollable." I think they were sold in these cool boxes for the trip home from the store. Most soft hats can be rolled on occasion. The boxes are great, but mine will not be going back in it. The Borsalino pocket hat with grosgrain sweat is perhaps a different story.

It's very thin and very soft. I don't plan on keeping in the little triangular box, though. I probably won't collapse it unless I'm traveling. I'll have to give it a try and see how easily it goes back into shape.

I also haven't seen one with such a brim that is why I got a custom from Jwalls. I think you ended off the year with a great aquisition Mike.

I was at a thrift store yesterday, and noticed a felt western from all the way across the store. I make a bee-line for it, seeing as it looked to be of decent size. What I found when I arrived was a "Trail Ridge" lined felt fedora, with the sweatband lettering touting a "fur blend." Without thinking or seeing a size, I plopped it on my head, and it being barely too small, needing a sweat, and being under $10, I made the purchase. When I arrive home, I start looking over the chocolate brown western very well, and find that it is 85% wool, 10% fur Dynafelt, and found the size tag, which states 7-1/4. It's the BIGGEST 7-1/4 I've ever seen, and it'll get stretched a tad more before the sweat goes in. Will add a picture soon.
