The video above is of my mother's family at the park, likely in 1962 or 1963 at latest. My grandfather (mom's dad) is the man in the blue shirt, without glasses. Starting around 1:30 or so in the video, he hits the golf ball into the hole and does (in slow mo) some sort of jumping move with the golf club. My mother believes this to be some reference to Jackie Gleason or something Jackie did on TV, as my grandpa was a fan of him. I was curious as to what it'd be referring to, for anyone who might know?

Sure looks like a Gleason move - though, could just as well be Bob Hope! I know I've seen it - It jogs a memory but I couldn't find anything similar on YouTube. -dixon cannon

Jackie Gleason's signature line was, I believe, "How sweet it is!" I don't recall him doing a hop-skip routine, connected with golf or not, but it's been a while.

It looks an awful lot like the little skip that Red Skelton used to do in the middle of a sketch, accompanied by a cow bell sound effect. I remember when the sound effect guy would miss it (or maybe that was planned) and Red stopping and ad-libbing a wisecrack. Red only did one skip/hop though, not several.

Now that I think about it, I believe Jackie Gleason also featured a sort of skip exit to "And . . . awaaay we go!"

Gleason's schtick was more of a sideways shuffle if I recall it correctly. I remember my mom saying that he fell and broke a leg doing that once but I don't know if that's true or just an urban legend.
