Yet again school has brought me to another interest point. We're studying Noir films and I was wondering if there are any suggestions of some really good Noir films for me and some of my buddies to watch. I love these movies, so befitting of our lounge.

Double Indemnity (1944)

The Bogie/Bacall (Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall) films, like Dark Passage or Key Largo, etc

Here's a man you should really look into. John Alton.

He was the definition of the noir style. He was a cinematographer in Hollywood and created many of the film noir styles with the low lighting and surreal shadows. Just go to his filmography on IMDB.com and you'll find tons of films with his sense of light

Note that it includes a wider range than the traditional, classic film noirs, such as films made after the style essentially petered out by 1960 that reflect its influence or explicitly copy it. For the most important classics, start with the 1940s films directed by Wilder, Huston, Lang, Welles...

You need to hit some key directors. See at least one movie of each of the main biggies and you will not only get a quick, good grasp of the genre, but you'll discover which is your favorite. That's what matters most, because in film noir, it is all about the directors. The following are musts:

Siodmak (Phantom Lady, The Killers, Criss Cross)
Tourneur (Out of the Past, Cat People)
Lang (Scarlet Street, The Blue Gardenia, The Big Heat)
Preminger (Where the Sidewalk Ends, Laura, Anatomy of a Murder)
Wilder (Sunset Blvd, Double Indemnity)
Ray (In a Lonely Place, Johnny Guitar, On Dangerous Ground)
Hitchcock (Vertigo, Shadow of a Doubt, Suspicion)
Welles (Touch of Evil, The Lady from Shanghai)
Dmytryk (Murder My Sweet, Crossfire)
Fuller (Shockproof, The Naked Kiss)

He Walked By Night was a weird one -- I remember liking it so-so at the time, but I've never forgotten it and I still think back to it every once in awhile. I think really was the start of some new threads in American movies and television.

Every one has a great film, tough as are to choose when it comes to Film Noir, might we choose the original ‚ÄúFallen Angel‚Äù directed by Otto Preminger, staring Dana Andrews, Alice Faye, we could also include ‚ÄúLaura‚Äù :eusa_clap doesn't make them the best but they do stick out in my mind, I always liked Otto Preminger.

Great lists everyone. Captain, that's my favourite Bogart film. The scene where Roy tells the young would-be heisters about the stool pigeon, and taps his finger on the tommy gun's case to imitate the sound of the gun firing, is classic.

My all time favorite has to be the often overlooked Dead End.

Some don't even consider it noir, as I guess it actually pre-dates the classic noir period. But to me it has all the earmarks of the genre - and it has Bogey for God's sake. What more could you want?
