Giant Pith Helmet Thread of Doom

I couldn't agree more about a Golden Era hunt. Honestly with films like Midnight in Paris and steam-punk culture sparking bouts of golden age thinking across the globe I don't know why there isn't more of a market for this stuff yet. I would like to see the American rail system do something too. Who wouldn't like a luxury cross country trip in a period sleeper car?

Well kinda off topic. We had at one time here a small group of 1920-30's safari mavens here. But due to things beyond our control kinda feel apart. Currently I'm throwing together a 1920's era North American hunting camp. Right out of the old Remington and Winchester ad posters of that era. Just kinda doing this for me.

I am in Houston. A pith helmet is great for our hot, humid weather.

The pug was pretty easy to make. That was my first attempt and it turned out great. The finish looks a little wonky. I didn't leave myself enough hatband material. I had to put a couple of stiches to get it to hold tight.

I found a tutorial online that showed how to fold it. I'm going to make another one for my Akubra Austrialian Slouch hat.

My wife and I premiered our matching Pith helmets at our 3rd annual hat party. We had a blast.

Yes, those are butterflys

The peoples choice award went to my buddy, Darrell. Can you guess which one he is?

Might as well add this here. Started with my BlueJays MLB New Era cap, got too much sum. upgraded to my Akubra Cattleman. Was still sweating like a son of a gun. Then swapped it out for my pith. Nice and cool in the hot sun.

found this helmet in an antique mall, and it happens to fit, so I bought it, and use it around yard when gardening and such. I don't think it's that old of a helmet. Any ideas on age? any telltale signs?

Got myself a Foreign Service model pith helmet last month from Ascot Top Hats. They're one of a couple of companies in this country who source their helmets from Vietnam, where they are genuinely made from pith and are faithful replicas of the original British designs. I can testify that on quite a warm day, where I was busy marshalling a large cycle ride around London, the helmet was both comfortable and cool.

Designs vary over time, the Bombay Bowler version I presently do is more rounded and is basically where the modern Polo Helmet derived from. Not all piths are great for sun, and I would recommend they have "green" on the under brim, the glare from a light coloured under brim can hurt the eyes compared with green under brim.

The Ascot Top Hats piths do have the green lining. But the Foreign Service model I was wearing is not as good for sun protection as the Wolseley model or Bombay Bowlers, which have wider brims and better neck coverage. I chose it for the look rather than sheer practicality.
