Fear of needles and pain sensitivity have little to do with getting a tattoo - I have both and I have been tattooed successfully multiple times.
Hopefully. I've never had a problem with needles and injections, so I don't imagine it'll be a big deal.
Yeah, I just want to be happy with the placement of all the pieces in relation to each other, really. I've had a few friends join individual pieces together before now, and a few of them have expressed the wish that they had planned ahead a bit more, as they would have like the earlier pieces to be placed differently against the new.

Edward I don't imagine you'd have a problem getting inked.
Certain areas of the body are more sensitive than others but I think you'd handle it just fine.

I've been advised to avoid the chest and the spine.... otherwise, should be fine. Guess I'll find out over the next month or two! Really hoping I can hack it, because I so want that quasi-half sleeve....
I've never been forces and don't envisage I'll ever be in the military, but I can certainly imagine that if I did end up serving, ink associated with that would make sense. Funnily enough, one of the things I want done is 'death or glory', but I'm absolutely avoiding any skull or anything other than the words. It's meaningful to me in a different context, and I don't want anything that looks wannabe military. I wouldn't have ink resembling an MC Club's colours that I hadn't earned either.
What are yours, if that's not too personal a question? (I just realised I assumed they are themed to your service, but re-reading your post that's not necessarily so).

My chest tattoo didn't hurt but for one spot that was like a tiny lightning strike. The endorphin rush wipes out most of the pain for me and I end up blissed out. I have to take a few moments to come down after tattoos. You might get lucky and have that same experience.
However, my sister and friends tell me the most painful spots are the side on the ribs and the back of the knee. I happen not to have any in those two areas. But if your first tattoo is not in one of these four 'most known for the worst pain' spots, you'll handle those spots better as later tattoos, once you know what you're dealing with, pain-wise.
Good luck! I wonder if you'll find them as addictive as so many of us do.

The underside of the arm is gonna kill you. There are so many more sensory nerves on the hairless parts of the arms.
The spine wasn't too bad actually. Took a wee while to get used to the vibration going right up, and the artist calling his mates over to "check out this muscle spasm". And the artist is renowned for being quite rough, pressing quite hard with the needle. I don't think I'd be able to afford this artist these days, post Kate Moss and London Ink, so I'm glad I went to him when I did (2002).
If I manage to get an academic position, I think I'll celebrate with a William Morris sleeve.

Yeah, I remember you saying that. When I say "quasi", I mean I'm planning on only having the design cover the outer side of the upper arm. Trying to avoid the inner arm for the look I have in mind. A lot depends on how well all the bits I want can fit in. It'd be easier if I was to extend them the length of the arm, but I'm wary of going there just yet as my end of academia can still be kinda conservative... (guess that's the facial tat out...
).

Well, so long as you're not flashing them around, the other academics wouldn't know surely? Our chaps tend to still be quite conservative, too. But if you produce the goods (i.e. overheads on grants) you can pretty much get away with anything, and I do mean anything … Some of the shenanigans that go on, let me tell you!

Heh. I could probably get away with a lot, but there's the difference between what you can get away with, and being taken seriously... I'm just not sure I'd want to go with the forearm inked as I often wear a short sleeved shirt in the office through the Summer, which would involve all on show. I've never heard ink mentioned at all (we don't have any sort of formal dress code in our department - they seem to trust us to know how and when to dress appropriately), but it's still sorta sticking your head over the parapet to be the first... (Not to have it - for all I know half of them have full body suits - but to have it seen).
What are you thinking of having done with the sleeve - got a specific design / theme in mind yet?

This thread needs a bump. I only have a couple of tattoos to share.
This was the first one done in 2011. My Dad had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's that year and my siblings wanted to do something to show Dad that we love and support him.
Dad has always been big into jigsaw puzzles. I remember this one that he had when I was a kid and he never attempted it until just a few years ago. It was called "Red Riding Hood's Hood" and was a large solid red circle with 500+ unique pieces. He got it done!
We decided to represent his lost memories as a red puzzle piece and told him (and Mom since he probably wouldn't remember) that if he feels that he is missing something he can come to us to find it.
Since my "distant" sister was in town for the Thanksgiving 2011 weekend we (me and my two sisters -- my brother opted out) and my youngest daughter all got our puzzle piece tattoos.
Dad said "better us than him", but he seemed to like them. At least he didn't lecture us!
The next one was from 2012 and represented my hobby of collecting vintage Schwinn bicycles. It is the AS&Co. (Arnold, Schwinn and Company) crankset from a 1938 catalog. I have a '40s Schwinn New World with this same crankset.
Now my problem is that I have about eight more designs that I would like to get. New hobbies can be dangerous, but I keep spending money elsewhere so I've not been in a tattoo parlor lately.

Bob those are really well done and good looking tattoos, and super cool reasons to have them.
Wish I could have as good a story behind each of mine, but some of 'em are just there because the beer was cold enough.
