I DO love fruitcakes. There are about three people in the world that actually likes them and I'm one of them. Send them all my way. You WILL pay the postage, right?

Money can be a good gift, if it is exactly what the person needs and it won't offend the recipient. A few years ago, I was sick and unemployed. My parents gave me money for my birthday and I thought it was the perfect gift.

However, people often give money because they just don't know what else to give.

I too enjoy fruitcake. In fact, I don’t buy into the whole, nobody likes fruitcake thing. Why would a business continue to make and sell a product that nobody likes or wants?

Pots, pans. Sort of like the artist kit thing. "I know you like to cook so I got this non-stick pan from Walmart."

"Oooohhh, thanks. I'll hang it up where I was saving space for the french copper pan with the tinned lining..."

This isn't exactly the same, but one Christmas before C and I were married, her mom (who always wants a list) was asking for ideas. I came up with at least one I that remember. I told her I would like to get a wok. I said specifically that I did not want an electric one. When Christmas arrived, I was at their house, opening an electric wok. Oh, the humanity!

I really don't want anything from anyone else. I mean, I like to receive gifts and I like surprises (recall my recent birthday thread - loved it! - that was a gift), but it is very hard to tell someone else what I want them to get me. No fun at all. My daughter has been asking of late what I want for Christmas. Of course I think this is very sweet, and I feel badly when I have nothing to tell her, or tell her, "Nothing."

It stems from my parents, I am sure, who always (genuinely) said to not get them anything for birthdays or anniversaries or Christmas. They appreciated it if you did, but it wasn't expected. Their reasoning being, whatever they needed throughout the year, they bought. And they didn't need much. We probably WANT more, being young and foolish, but it's the same with us.

Something we have learned in this house is to not tell anyone you like anything. Several years ago, I inadvertantly initiated being innundated with macadamia nuts - plain, chocolate covered ('course, I miss those), in cookies, etc. I don't know how many birthdays and Christmases after I received said nuts. Once Carrie became a nurse, it was nurse statue here, nurse bear pin there, nurse poem plaques, etc. Birdhouses you say? No thanks. We have a ton of those already. How about when somebody shares your list? One Christmas, I think I received about 4 bottles of Gorilla glue. Another time, maybe 3 bottles of after shave - the same brand of after shave, mind you.

Fruitcake?? Another guy right here.

To answer the question, "What don't you want?" As others have said, I don't want somebody to give me something just because they think they have to. And, if I give you something, please don't try to give me something if you hadn't previously planned on it.

I don't see how it can feel like Christmas here anyway. Good grief, it's November 27th and 71 degrees! So long from Illinois, where we have only two seasons.

Chocolate covered cherries; I used to like them as a kid. To this day I still get a big box of them from my mom every Christmas. The problem is that she never buys the good ones, just the same cheap brand for the last twenty years.
