Autumnal Thoughts........

I am pining for autumn. It's been so very hot here and couple that with the humidity and it's like a sauna outside. Every summer gets worse and worse for me in terms of dealing with the heat and the depression that comes along with it. (I'm pretty sure I have the summer version of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)). We finally got a break from it today - low 80s now.

I was feeling somewhat similar and, then, an email came in from a clothing company - North Sea Clothing London (http://www.northseaclothing.com) - where, last year for Christmas, we bought my girlfriend's father a beautiful wool sweater, this one

He's in his 80s, has had his health issues and we are lucky he's still with us - but. thankfully, overall is doing well - so we intentionally try to spoil him. This was not an inexpensive sweater, so even though I wanted one too, it was well past what I pay for clothes for myself and not going to happen. Then in the spring, they went on stupid silly sale (more than half off) and I bought this one for myself:

These sweaters are incredible. They are ridiculously well made, with heavy, heavy wool and very thick cuffs and waistbands that won't lose their shape - probably ever.

So today, with the temperature and humidity rising, fans blowing and work meh, the North Sea's email - with a real sale (not an every-other-day "sale" like those built into some companies business model) lead me to buy these two - the first (in ecru for my girlfriend's dad and the second one in grey for me) as the price was really, really good and it allowed me to think of Autumn and sweaters and leaves and crisp air.

For dad:

For me:

If they appeal to you, check out the sale section as the prices are really good and, in the two years I've known about this company, they have only had a few items on sale a few times.

Cold weather can't get here fast enough! I am battling three nest of Paper Wasps. Usually, if I spray the nest and then knock it down, that is that, no more Wasps! These three just wont go away, and they are in under the eaves where I can't get a good look at them, or a good spray!

Ohhh...these look heavenly! And make me want autumn to get here much sooner rather than later!

Western Europe doesn't get many glorious summers, so we tend to lap up the sun whilst it's with us. It's been wet the last few days, but the sun is back again now. I'm glad about that because Tina and I enjoy vintage music festivals. We are going to three over the next few weeks.

Our railways come up with some really pathetic excuses for delays and cancellations, but the most common is leaves on the rails, wet leaves. Apparently it makes the wheels skid. We only get falling leaves in Autumn and the Victorians never had the problem of leaves. honestly, you couldn't make it up.

The United States was falling apart in the '70s - nothing was working. I used to take the train into NYC form NJ (about an hour and half ride from my town) and in the summer, almost every night, there'd be delays because of - and I kid you not - the heat. Supposedly it expanded the metal (true enough) and the switches couldn't function.

Come on - the switches weren't design for some expansion in hot weather - even when it was only, say, 80 degrees. I'm a bit of a train buff, and I never read about that as a common problem. As you said, you couldn't make it up. I'll accept that things get wonky when temperatures hit extremes that most system aren't built for - in NJ - say 100 degrees. But once things started to right themselves in the 1980s, the trains worked fine in all but the really extreme heat. And the guys a decade or more older than me said they ran fine in the summers in the '50s and '60s.

It's funny / sad to look back on it, but add a half hour or more on to an already too-long commute and I was pretty frustrated as the train crawled along the tracks in the summer in the '70s because, well, it's hot in the summer (hard to believe that had to come as a surprise to NJ Transit).

Hate those nasty boogers! I got stung three times this year by those damn things.

You know how Swiss clocks and watches have a worldwide reputation for perfect time keeping? Well their railway network works the same way. Perfect time, to the second. Look up, Swiss Alps snow plough train.

Normally I'm a warm weather person, but holy cow it has been one truly long, hot summer. Today's temperature was 95 degrees with a heat index making it feel like 106! We get the afternoon sun, so we keep all the blinds and curtains drawn to help make the house cooler. I actually bought a pair of what amounts to blackout curtains for the bedroom . They really keep the light out and the room much cooler. This year I'm ready for autumn with it's warm days and cool nights - I know my poor AC will be glad for the rest when cooler weather gets here.

Used to really love it! Not so much anymore...
It doesn't cool off here until the second or third week of November now (it's the reason we have an epidemic of Australian apple moths).
Which means half of the football season is already over, who wants to watch football when it's 80%?
And, it doesn't much matter about the season, because I've stopped watching the N-ational F-elon's L-eague about three years ago.
Last time I saw the kids making their annual Halloween rounds in my neighbourhood was a LONG time ago, The kids can't afford to LIVE in the neighbourhood.
I'm only able to wear a portion of my Fall/Winter wardrobe, from the end of NOV to mid FEB

It was hotter than blue blazes here . . . until yesterday. Rain blew through & wait for it . . . it's EIGHTY-FOUR in AUGUST!

In TEXAS!

I don't know what happened, but I know next time I open the front door I'm gonna get slapped in the face with crazy, stupid, humid heat-instant-sweat-breathlessness and it'll be 5,000 degrees again.

Until the end of November.

That happened to me when we visited the pyramids in Egypt. Stepped off the air conditioned coach into the full force of Sahara heat. Talking of heat, our weather forecasters tell us that the hot weather is heading our way. We have a public holiday at the end of August, it's the last one we get before Christmas. Such is the weather that the holiday is often referred to as the rain making weekend. Not this year it would seem.

Sounds like I'd already be acclimatized to the weather in Egypt, unfortunately. lol And only one holiday before Christmas? Hope you do get rain, and soon.

I was so desperate for autumn the other day that I went into Yankee Candle Company, bought autumn-scented candles, & went home and lit them. Fall cannot come fast enough this year.

What is this autumn you speak of? I need one of those candles to fool myself into thinking it will actually happen sooner rather than later.
