How do folks react to your hat wearing?

Today I noticed a gentleman wearing a very nice Open Road. I complimented him on it, and asked where he bought it and it turned out he had it custom made from one of my favorites makers----- Jaxonbilt Hat Co in Salmon ID. Usually I'm the one wearing a Jaxonbilt, but today it was my turn to react to someone wearing a hat!

Invisible man sez, I’ve been wearing several different hats at the Gem Show in Tucson, and get a couple of ‘nice hat’ a day. But the black Filson wool vest is winning about 3 to one.

Wondering how you blanked out your face in that photo...that's either some uncanny editing skills, or some serious blowout on the camera...lol.

Either way...good way to highlight the coat and hat.

Purely unintentional, but I do look better that way.
We have some seriously bright lights to bring out the sparkle on the various mineral specimens for sale.
Why it didn’t wash out the hat and vest, I dunno. Perhaps the pure white beard had some effect.

The Famous Flying Scotsman Steam Train was running on a heritage line about an hour's drive from where we live. Trying to get seats on the train was almost impossible. I had forgotten that Sunday 31st March is Mother's Day in the UK, now wonder it was nigh impossible to get seats. But I had left my name on the reserve list and a phone call on Saturday from the heritage railway, made a dream come true. There had been a cancellation for the dining car, did we want to have lunch on the train? Did we? Is the pope a catholic? We just had to dress up of course. Unfortunately I didn't think to get our photo taken, but many others did. We must have been stopped and complimented a dozen times or more. I can show you what we wore, Tina is wearing the same outfit that she made for our niece's wedding and I was wearing a summer blazer and the baggy trousers that Tina had made me. One young woman stopped us in the street to say how wonderful to see a couple both wearing hats, adding that it made her day. Tina's hat is bespoke, made by a milliner that we knew when we lived in London. My hat is one of Esther's creations.
It was an amazing day, I wouldn't be so churlish as to suggest that we upstaged Flying Scotsman, but we did get photographed time and again.

Saturdays are the big day for wine sampling at Stew Leonard's. As we were in the vicinity for lunch last Saturday, we stopped in to SL's, as we needed to stock up. Of course, the samples were a welcomed and appreciated windfall on that lovely afternoon.

Anyway, one of the young ladies doing the pouring (and talking - you can't just pour doing that job) complimented me on my lid, that day being my brown Fed IV.

I really don't get reactions. People don't mention it and don't seem to be bothered by it one way or the other. They just go about their day and I go about mine as if it's the most normal thing.

We'll see if that holds true as I ramp up wearing a hat more than a few times a week.

This seems normal to me. It's not like I walk down the street and dozens of people fawn at my feet.

Every once in a while, though, I'll get a compliment, and I wear a fedora literally all the time.

I will say, the people close to me are supportive of my renewed interest in hats. In particular, a good lady friend of mine seems to be almost as enthusiastic about it as I am, and she doesn't live close enough to have actually seen me wearing them in person. She'll even send me links and videos of stuff she thinks would pair well with the various hats.

As long as I have support like that behind me, the general public's opinion really doesn't mean much to me.

As always you both look utterly charming. It's a great experience travelling on such a famous railway train. I had the pleasure of doing the same thing last year at Peterborough.

Thank you, kind of you to say so. Just as Scotty and The Jackal observe, most people won't even give a hat wearer a second look, I do suspect that Tina's talent in making what we wore had something to do with it. She wants me to add that she didn't make my summer blazer.

It's also worth noting that the heritage railway was the former branch line from Wareham to Swanage, we had to board the train at Swanage. The evening before saw us at a rather good vintage big band dance, that too was in Swanage, so we stayed in a hotel overnight. We had to vacate our room by 9:30 and our adventure with Flying Scotsman was three hours away so we went for a stroll around the town, stopping off for a light breakfast and hot drinks. Swanage is a very popular coastal town, the glorious weather, along with it being Mother's Day had drawn large crowds, there to soak up the sun, get a glimpse of Flying Scotsman, make a special fuss of mother or simply to chill out.

The weather, along with the draw of the sandy beach, meant that for most chilling out was done in simple clothing like T-shirt, shorts and sandals. Seeing a couple dressed up in the style that Flying Scotsman might have recognised back in the pre-war days, when the engine hauled the express trains from Edinburgh to London, was not exactly a common sight. So much so that people not only stopped us, they asked permission to photograph us. Nobody was at all rude, on the contrary, the were all very generous with their compliments, so I dare say we are featured somewhere on social media.

Ok, finally have some good anecdotes for this thread. The past two trips I've taken, I selected my Stetson Junior Cowboy. It's silverbelly (well, one of those light tones, I'm not the best at deciphering between the light neutral colors like sand and whatnot) so it matches easily.

Back in January, I was in Phoenix visiting my brother. One of the things we've been doing now that we're adults living in different states, is going to pro-wrestling shows. We both watched when we were kids, so it's always a fun mini-vacation. Anyhow, we were watching a set of tapings they were doing for their streaming network sitting in the bleachers. There's currently a wrestler whose character is a pretty flamboyant dresser, think Prince the musician, but 6'2" and muscular. He won the tournament final, so we stood up to cheer. He was standing up on the corner turnbuckles celebrating and looking out into the crowd, he looks right at me, pantomimes grabbing a hat brim and gave me a thumbs up and "love the hat!" Which, you know, as a fan of this admittedly silly almost-sport was very cool.

I was in NYC over this past weekend. Upstairs at The Met in the Impressionist gallery, a woman approached me and with an unmistakable accent says "I'm from Texas and I just wanna say I love what you're wearing!"

The next day, I was strolling through Times Square with a friend who now lives there, and two young gen z kids tapped me on the shoulder to ask if they could take a picture of my outfit. We exchanged a few words about fashion (of which I know almost nothing) and they asked for my Instagram.

So there you go, try a 3" brim, you might like it!

Your experience @jlee562 reminded me of my most recent visit to my city kids/grandkids, a couple of weeks ago.
I was in line at Blu Cafe on Riverside Blvd. (Although, when in NYC, one is “ON” line.) Robin Roberts was actually on line in front of me, but I digress.
As she was pouring my coffee, the coffee gal said, “sir, I have to say I really like your outfit!”

Sure, that one blew my old mind, but then when she handed me the charge to sign for, with the very convenient selection of gratuity check boxes, I realized that I may have been played like a Stradivarius, and still gave her a nice one.
