Often buying hats is fun, sometimes the stories of the hats become a thread in the history of some place or some person. Some of these hats belonged to a single owner, rich Sicilian landowner. Finished with the furniture and furnishings of his house in a junk dealer warehouse, I recovered them after a long and amusing negotiation. I didn't want the furniture, very many, but only the hats. Easy to say, more difficult to achieve
Barbisio Qualità Extra size is 6 1/2 or 60 cm. 7 1/2 US

The felt was assaulted by moths and I think it will be difficult to be "rebuilt"

Alexander Sport size in UK measurement 7 3/8 or 60 cm. It is the wider of the three

Lovely hat in heather green felt with frayed bow

Panizza For Ever size is 60 cm. or 7 1/2 US

Sturdy heather felt in grey, I suspect it is a mixed. Contrasting ribbon

This salesman, on the other hand, seems to specialize in hats of some disaster. These seem to have suffered from humidity and even flooding even if they are new.
Albertini. Linea Panizza. Size is supposed to be 59

The felt has a lovely short hair finish, the sweatband is dead and it need some works. The color is great

Brasiliano, tagged 60 cm or 7 1/2 Us is now, after humidity a 58 cm.

Interior is new and the black felt is really nice. I think it was made in Monza during the 50 or 60

They are still sitting in my office ready to be send to the hatter for a new life

Bailey 5X Beaver hand creased Gambler.

This is a new hat style for me. I don’t normally even look at Bailey, I don’t care for telescope/pork pie crowns, or lower crowns.
The seller only gave dimensions and they were...almost close. I bit of brute force and steam and it now fits.

I recently had momentary ownership of a 1960s Stetson “Beaver 25” and I’ll say that this Bailey is the better hat in every measure. Despite the “hand creased” name, the felt is very firm, but the hand is nice. The sweat is thick full-grain leather and reasonably supple. I’d be open to buying another for the right price.

Well this black beauty arrived a day early:

Surprisingly, the fit isn't bad at all. A tad tight at 7-7/8 x 6-1/2, but a little bump and some head time should make it conform nicely. Only issue I can find is that the liner is loose and could be restitched (listing described as "good condition but needs repair"). Otherwise it's a fantastic hat. At $7.50, my new best deal on eBay.

....am I GREEN, not only it that one heck of a haul..but they are all my size!!!!! I know you are my size....so keep most of them.... but you always give me hope when you cut loose of the larger proportioned ones!!!

Very nice and interesting finds, Daniele. Hard to choose between them, but the Panizza For Ever is very special.

Mark my policy of buying hats in my size is very narrow, after the restoration work I'll see what to keep and what to sell

Stefan the Panizza is very beautiful and unusual for the felt and its definition, but my favorite is the Alexander Sport which is certainly Italian made, even if I couldn't figure out who produced it
Some more hats are coming both from the market and from the hatter

Daniele, do you have a business of selling vintage hats there in Italy? I like your idea of restoring hats before making a decision on selling them.

Dennis I have no business in vintage hats, I'm just a collector. At the beginning of my passion I bought the hats I liked, even not of my size that is between 59-60 centimeters, especially when I found "deposits" of inventories of closed shops or of some wholesaler, naturally in Italy and France where I had some good success. Since last year I changed my investment policy, I buy hats in my size and then decide whether to restore them or not. Sometimes there are lots in which one or two are my size and the rest, no, so I have limited my purchases in the last twelve months. I am not looking for the single hat, the rare or branded one, living in the Eden of hats with neighboring other paradises, I prefer eccleticity and my curiosity guides me. Currently I have a dozen hats, of my size, being worked to be restored or cleaned, others, smaller, are in the works and then I will decide what to do, as well as for part of my collection.

7.5" open crown and 5" brim.

Daniele: Living in the Eden of Hats must be a wonderful experience. I can see how you would not be loyal to one or two brands. Always looking for a great hat, no matter what brand. Keep sharing those awesome hats. I love seeing them.
