carrying more weight than I want to (lockdown hasn't helped as I've not been commuting for over a year now, so not even the walk to the train station; trying to get out to walk for exercise more often now, but it's not easy given the extra hours work swallows teaching online)
OT
A fate that you will surely share with many.
It is also too tempting to indulge in indolence. But I know some who are fitter than ever when they work from home. And that with just a few minutes of time per day. The secret is to outsmart your weaker self.
Just as a thought, without wanting to offend anyone.

What honestly helps me think twice about a certain piece of outwerwear are Instagram accounts like fjorde, jorge, that bearded dude, that other bearded dude and anyone else using the word "rugged" in a non ironic manner. I instantly want to invest into a nice pair of Adidas sweatpants.

Hillarious! And so true...!!

Off topic, but - sadly - I need to disagree! I have been physically very active for all my life. And while I spend exactly the same amount of time exercising in the strict sense (biking, running, weight training, hiking etc.), I still have gained 3 kilos during lockdown. It MUST be the lack of daily routines such as walking to a restaurant, going shopping with your wife, heading to in-person meetings 10 times a day etc....). Certainly doesn´t help that my gym is now closed for over a year. Used to head their in my lunchbreak twice a week. Didn´t find any proper compensation for this and experience back-pains for the first time ever.

I'm sorry.
It works fine for me. But I've always done my sport at home and I can paddle at lockdown too.

Exactly that. Buy a new piece of electronic and it's basically junk after a year. Car will get you on an express highway to frustration town, either because of increasingly deranged traffic or having to deal with random imaginary new fees they come up each year plus gas prices, worrying someone's gonna steal/damage it, etc.
It's really not that simple finding an enjoyable hobby that doesn't seem like a complete waste of money and clothes is closest I can think of. Plus it makes you look... Well, if not good then at least more confident. Which matters. :D

Did you see those guys?? How is it possible to suck out all the cool out of a cross zip like that? I would not think it possible, I really wouldn't but then fjorde posts another photo and bam, he did it again. May God have mercy on his soul.

You made me look. Why did I look? That guy Fjorde looks ridiculous. I agree, there's just something about it that sucks all the fun out of crosszips.

Don´t be! I was half-joking to a friend the other day, that a lot of my colleagues are exercising for the first time in their lifes because lockdown gives them much more free time and little else to do.

I got pulled in by Aero initially, managed it for a few years then slowly kicked the habit, or so I thought. Then I got pulled back in by Eastman, which was an even more expensive habit, but I coped, dogs were fed, roof remained over my head... . Eventually I managed to get that under control as well. Unfortunately last year I fell into the Bronson, Five Star pit and a Bill Kelso to boot, not a full relapse but bad enough. At the moment the urge seems to have eased again, but I'm definitely worried that the knowledge there's a Five Star Irvin being planned may cause a third relapse, there really is no hope I'm afraid.

I admire those who can stick to leather jackets! My problem is much more widespread and it covers most casual clothing. Although I admittedly tend to get rid off/sell stuff I don’t wear, so while relentless I hardly accumulate. When the wardrobe is too full I just can’t look at it, it makes me somewhat anxious.

I also normally find that after periods of calm with few scattered purchases I come back stronger and crazier than before and sort of more than make up for it in a few weeks!

Ehh fjorde really is in a league all of his own... 20 rings on each hand, the skinny jeans over engineers, where to stop?! It’s like a chav and a circa 2010 hipster had a child...

So I have to say that I am generally prone to bulk purchases.
Whenever I find something I like, I always buy more and more of it. E.g. I bought every color of a model from chinos in a very short time only to find out later that they didn't fit that well. I have one and the same sports shoe in 5 colors and another one too. Cloth jackets, saccos, shirts exactly the same. But now I try not to reflexively buy the second and third version of new things, but first to wait to see how the enjoyment develops. I can still buy it then.
Hopefully my last leather jacket will be delivered the day after tomorrow.

There is no overcoming the TFL effect. In my opinion the larger issue is keeping it interesting. I've kind of found myself at a point where jackets seem pretty boring. I don't know where else to even go with it. Crosszip-been there/done that, same for halfbelts and Cr's. Vintage stuff, yeah cool but harder to fit and find in wearable shape. The answer is denim! No, it's not, never mind. I'm always looking but it seems I'm also buying the same stuff over and over in various degrees of quality which has no impact whether or not I'll wear it or enjoy it. I think the only way to overcome the TFL effect is to simply become bored with the hobby. Cowichan sweater anyone?
Next up: 70's era ski jackets....

If I had a penny for every time someone said that the next jacket will be the last one, and then it wasn't the last one. I wouldn't be exactly rich, but I'd have a few pennies. But hey, maybe it will be your last one :)
I know, i know lol.
But for this month it was.
I only have two jackets left in my mind.
A minimal cafe racer without lining and pockets and a shearling cafe racer.
But I am confident that I will come up with something new.
Fortunately or unfortunately, the second hand market is not available for my size. And since I don't have a leather tailor, off-the-shelf jackets are also omitted.

I have 8 jackets in 8 years being here every single one made locally from local hide but all my own imagination, and I have no future plan of any model I want to have anymore, and with the coming cross zip I feel I have all jackets I care to have.

same with jeans, have no plan to buy anything I have 3 heavyweights selvedge, one is unsanforized from japanese fabric, one is indigo x indigo, and one is is everything I wanted in a jeans none showing the slightest fade , I have 4 cord pants I love to wear, I still love wearing my cargo pants.

my textile jacket thirst is also sated, I have indigo x black, I have sashiko type3, I have custom mod type 2 with slant pockets and cinchback in neppy denim, what more do I need.. nothing from abroad all locals but all selvedge and soundly built 14 and 16oz

also have no ambition on boots, I love the ones I have.

the only thing I want more is vest, I'm thinking about leather vests some with V collar some with crew collar, after that I really have zero clothing goal for foreseeable future.

I have no problem seeing other people's jackets, liking the unique thedis and those perfect fit FLs on others, liking it for them, doesn't mean I need to own them too, saving the picture of grains popping or perfect fit example, or faded jackets is all I do.

I have shifted my interest in enjoying what I already have or seeing others enjoying theirs a long time ago.

My situation is similar to @torfjord. I was going along buying and selling until my Kehoe. Funny enough I passed on it the first sale. The fringe was what lured me to try it. After I cut it all off, the leather and (most of) the cut kept me. I bought another one with a different configuration (classic Brooks style) and even though it’s a size or 2 big, I really like wearing it. It invokes everything I wanted going into this- the feel, etc.
Now, I look at the others hanging in the closet fondly but not enough to wear them. With the exception of the Imperial, they need to go Get worn by someone else. Then I’ll have most of the funding for the “final” one...

It would be hard to call any of my jacket buys a relapse since I never went long enough between purchases to pretend I had any self control in the first place. Also, the brief respites I have taken from jacket buying are usually when I find something else to obsess over and buy, in 2019 it was electric guitars and last year it was firearms.
On another note, I also looked up this Fjorde character and I have to say I agree with the general consensus. The photos of him and his pal posing in alleyways wearing their Marlon Brando caps are particularly uninspiring.

I tend to do the same with buying stuff. I find something I like and fits me well and I buy up a ton of colorways. I'm pretty specific on my fits so once I find a maker/brand/cut that works for me I tend to go a bit overboard.
