I thought I would post this link for you, as I discovered that you can purchase these old-style sodas online and they will ship wordlwide (for those of you who cannot find these specialty drinks in your neck of the woods.)

I frequent Pop The Soda Shop somewhat regularly and love to try the different sodas made with vintage recipes. I highly recommend the Dr. Pepper w/Sugar (there is one plant left making it with Imperial Pure Cane Sugar), and the Coke from Holland, which supposedly tastes like 1940s Coca Cola (again, made with sugar cane; it tastes much drier and crisper than modern Coke, and is so refreshing!)

I second that on the Dr Pepper. You can also order cases of the Dr Pepper with Imperial Sugar from the factory's website Dublin Dr Pepper There is also the Dr Pepper Museum Store from which you can buy reproductions of the different vintage Dr Pepper signs, and other Dr Pepper paraphernalia.

And you can taste a huge difference between the original and the current product. I realize that high fructose corn syrup is the economical choice, but people today don't know what they are missing!

If you guys get the chance, get you a case of Sundrops. There was a plant that it was bottled in the town I grew up in, so every single store stocked it there.

Even so, its not very widespread beyond the borders of North Carolina.

All other lemon-lime sodas pale in comparison, you'll never go back to "mountain-dew"

I grew up shuttling between Miami, FL and Franklin, NC. There is a soda in NC that is really quite good and is clearly a throw back to a much earlier era. It is called Cheerwine. Everytime I am in NC I have to pick up a few cases to bring home. Now, I agree that sodas made with pure cane sugar have a different taste and feel in the mouth. I would also add that I think sodas in glass seem to have more fizz and have a better taste. Way back in my misspent youth I made Root Beer and it was dang good stuff.

Well, I like the fact that they have Jones Soda...but I hate the selection, and the fact that it costs more to have it sent from them. But then again, I live the States and get jones very easily

I can agree with those who boasted on Cheerwine, and Sun Drop. There is one store in town that stocks Cheerwine in an old glass bottle. Best tasting soda I ever had, and is only about 75 cents!

Any one here try a Chocolate/Cherry Coke? I was told that it was really good and well, I tried it at the Fair Oaks Pharmacy the other day and I was hooked! It's not one of those you can find in a bottle, but if you can find an old fashioned soda fountain, they can make you one. Or, just go to the store and buy Hershey?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s syrup and some cherry syrup and mix it in! I'm not sure the exact mixture, I'll have to check on that but what ever you do, don't buy Cherry Coke and mix it with Hershey?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s! You get the real old fashioned flavor if you mix the two syrups!

Ah soda, my one true weakness!

when I was a kid, my dad made a whole bunch of root beer. All natural and bottled it in the basement. Well it needed to sit a while to get all fizzy and I think he put too much sugar in because after a week or so, late at night we'd hear explosions in the basement. It tasted aweful and we gave it to our amish neighboors who thought it was the best tasting stuff.

Just a little soda story.
